By Sapa | Mar 15, 2013 | COMMENTS [ 60 ]

Sauer Street in the Johannesburg CBD is being renamed after the founding president of the ANC, Pixley ka Isaka Seme, according to a report on Friday.

The Gauteng government changed the street name on Thursday, The Star reported.

"We can confirm that we are proceeding with the renaming of Sauer Street and from now henceforth the street shall be known as Pixley ka Isaka Seme Street," Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile was quoted as saying.

The street runs south to north through the Johannesburg CBD.

The Star's offices and the African National Congress's headquarters, Luthuli House, are in the street, as are the head offices of the provincial departments of health and housing.

According to the City of Johannesburg website, Sauer Street was named after Dr Hans Sauer, the city's first district surgeon.

In April 1887. a small hospital was set up in a corrugated iron building where he worked.

Commissioner Street, which crosses Sauer Street and runs east to west through downtown Johannesburg was also up for renaming, the newspaper reported.

the only thing that drives stuff with our hyhena team is................ money.....

so I have to wonder what companies are gonna get the contracts for the signs.... who owns the companies? who is going to get kickbacks for the sign contracts?

and of course the people like mychief will defend this sign stuff .....

if there is nothing in it for the hyhenas is does not get done... so like the heyenas cant make money out of rape.... so nothing gets done...its so bad now look at our statistics for rape compared to the world.

If street renaming was an Olympic sport.... we would be the world champions.......

If only we if Bafana were as good as we are at street renaming... we would be unbeaten for 18 years in a row

In terms of people suffering from poverty stuff we have some of the worst statistics in the world

Thanks to our new African National Clown crew

Mzabalazo - How about a street named after the first African astronaut? Something inspiring, instead of something uninspiring, like anything ANC related.

R1.5 billion for changing street names when people are without basics like water or sanitation? How does that make sense?
Well, it create some temporal jobs. People had a share of this R1.5 billion. Again, struggle heroes need to be recognised and we must learn about them

No that is a lie, you are not recognising struggle heroes, you are recognising the ANC STRUGGLE HEROES! IF YOU WERE RECOGNISING STRUGGLE HEROES YOU WOULD HAVE JEFF MASEMOLA! ZEPHANIAH MOTHOPHENG! ROBERT SOBUKWE! KHOTSHO SEATHLOLO! TSIETSI MASHININI ! TROFOMO SOMO! STEVE BIKO! ONGOPOTSE TIRO! MOHAPI! MTHULI KA SHEZI! GEORGE WAUCHOPE whom the ANC would not even allow him to return to his country which he fought for and died in Birmingham England two years ago. These are some of the heroes of our struggle who you do not want our nation to know about. You are just ANCnasing the country, doing exactly what tyrants and dictators do, brainwashing the nation. A country transcend a party, you cannot use only your names to name what belongs to all South Africans, we have geniuses like Chris Barnard, who made an outstanding contribution to the all of mankind, today we have a young South African who has invented a fuel for space shuttle, how can you be so monopolistic, you really do not see what you are doing, some of these names will be replaced when the other generation takes over, because they are not sustainable, they do not reflect our true history they sectarian oriented.

mychief - Dude, one thing you need to accept, is that people from all different shades live in South Africa. Not just black folks.

And yeah, like MommaC said, why rename church street, and keep some blatantly obvious choices remaining?

I'll tell you why, its because the ANC renames street without any intelligence, without putting any thought into it.

We need street names which represent a free South Africa, not a colonial, apartheid state. It took our ANC-led government too long to make these reforms. That's why we have counter-revolutionaries defending names only associated with apartheid names who served only the interests of the minority at the expense of the majority. Now we have people complaining that these African names are difficult to pronounce, of course this is Africa. Was it easy for us to learn and leave with the likes of Kruger, Potgieter, Van der Merwe? We want names in RSA which represent an African state. We want more cities to transform. We fought for liberation of this country and therefore our struggle heroes need recognition. Away with apartheid (segregation), away! Forward with transformation, forward!

Lehido - The streets are being named after RESPECTABLE ANC presidents...
