Government spends R140million to redesign website

The Free State provincial government spent R140 million on its website, it was reported on Monday.

Free State director general Elzabe Rockman signed a three-year contract to redesign the website in 2011.

She had reportedly disputed the amount, claiming it was actually R40m.

The agreement was signed with businessman Tumi Ntsele, who reportedly holds tenders with several other provincial departments.

It was reported that the company was awarded the tender even though two other companies submitted significantly lower bids.

Etionee Bruwer, owner of web development company Jam Factory, told the newspaper the amount charged for the website was "ridiculous".

"The company that is working on that site is probably making R3.5m profit a month," he said.

Bruwer said the most paid for a website was R12m, by financial institutions which needed to protect sensitive information.

Ntsele told the newspaper opposition parties had an agenda against black businessmen and that the website's cost was fair.

The full story is in the Sowetan newspaper today. Be sure to get yourself a copy.

And currently the owner of Cherry Online Design is telling untrue versions, spreading a footage which only shows half of the information on media sites, started with OFM about a cop just assaulted them because they gay. This is untrue. The owner of Cherry Online Design which is now mid in this fraud website scam Neil Sonnekus, tells media he were in a coma, his life were hanging on a line due to an assault where he were innocent. Totally untrue. The footage has been tampered with, he only went to the doctor 2 days later, his report do not indicate any fractured skull, he speaks to local media in Bloemfontein & spreading a footage where he himself is cut of where he started the whole incident. Now he is playing the victim here, is he now sending this footage which is not so brutal as it looks because how can you only go to a doctor 2 days later with only an abbrasion on your upper lip but telling all these other lies & spreading this footage and half the truth to media for what reason? Is it because he wants this guy be found guilty & then he wants to sue civil so that this person can pay for his 140million fraud scam??? No this is unfair!! I know the truth & I hope that this scumbags truth comes out, that his life is also been made hell such as what his family is going through since! This is good people! Neil Sonnekus should rot in jail for stealing taxpayers money, not the bully that hit him! That was an open hand hit not even a fist & now he is telling everyone its a gay bashing, should be ashamed to admit in public your gay even man! Sis!

R 140m or even R 40m for a website designed using WordPress is ridiculous.

Hell I could have designed a decent website for free given the amount of online applications one can use. Easy, straight forward and can be designed in a day if you know what you are doing. The tricky bits come when one has to look at security and the data but still even then this is crazy money for nothing.

This is theft; stop using race to justify theft from state coffers.

Oh ok, what kind of a website cost R140Million

@imfene - Websites could cost between R1000 to R100,000+ without having any security certificates or codes within them. Styles and complexity of web designs defer from one to another.
@Afrojoy - Judging from the finished product, the website should not have cost more than R10,000.

The website was built on wordpress software which is an open source CMS (content management system) ,The template was also bought pre-made for $40,The template already carried a few wordpress plugins like Jquery slider but a few were added. The logo however looks like it was lifted off a Jpeg picture.

Even more disturbing is that the company that allegedly designed this website according to the label at the bottom of the website does not have a published website : www.cherryonline.co

One more thing I noticed is that the website takes forever to load, that can make viewing the website very frustrating. I tried testing it on gtmetrix.com but even gtmetrix could not capture the website because it was too slow. The designer should have taken measures to increase the page speed of the website.I also noticed that their host is having server downtime, way too many hiccups for a R140 Mil website.

I am inclined to believe that an up and coming web designer was given this job. All in all the design is shabby and not worth more than R10,000.If i was not hiding my real identity here ,i would have shown you my web design portfolio.

I specialize in joomla myself but I go the extra mile to develop eye candies which will grab the attention of potential customers.

@YourDesigncoza - Lol! nice one bro ,you got them. These guys just bought a $40 template ,loaded it on their worpress installation
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

that is the thing, all they did was work on a template. All the work can be done in a day if you know what you are doing and Wordpress has crappy templates for that matter.

There are much better templates out there that are easier to manage.
