PARALYMPIAN Oscar Pistorius stands to lose more than R250000 due to his withdrawal from races for the foreseeable future.

After visiting Pistorius at Brooklyn police station in Pretoria on Sunday, his agent, Peet van Zyl, said in a statement that Pistorius would miss all his future races to focus on his court case.

Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, after she was shot dead in his Pretoria house in the early hours onValentine's Day. He will bring a bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court today.

"The nature of my visit today was two-fold. On a personal level, I wanted to offer my support to Oscar, who I have known and worked with for in the last seven years and consider a friend and a great professional athlete. Secondly, I wanted to briefly discuss racing matters given that his key focus is defending himself against this serious charge," read the statement, which was posted on Pistorius's website.

Pistorius will miss out on a series of events from the beginning of March to the last week of May, including the Qantas Athletics tour in Australia, Drake Relays in the Unites States and the Manchester City Games in the United Kingdom.

Other competitions were still beingdiscussed as Pistorius had focused on the IAAF World Championships in Moscow in August .

The Qantas Athletics tour carries prize money of about R35200 for first place. The Drake Relays in Iowa awards a first prize of R220000. This would amount to R255780 if he had won races at these two events.

"Regarding sponsors and partners, I can confirm that at this point in time all parties are supportive and their contractual commitments are maintained.

"They have said they are happy to let the legal process takes its course before making any change in their position," Van Zyl said. - nkosin@sowetan.co.za
