Third man arrested for Anene Booysen's rape and murder

A third man was arrested on Friday in connection with the gang rape, murder and mutilation of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen, Western Cape police said.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the 23-year-old man, from the same area, was arrested at 9.30am.

"He will be charged and will also appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday."

Two other men, aged 21 and 22, were already in police custody, facing murder and rape charges.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Western Cape spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the 21-year-old would appear in court on Monday. Once the man had appeared, the case would be postponed to Tuesday to coincide with the appearance of the 22-year-old, who Booysen identified shortly before she died in hospital.

He made his first court appearance earlier in the week.

Booysen, 17, was left for dead at a construction site near her home, in the early hours of Saturday morning, after visiting a sports bar. She had reportedly worked as a cleaner for Asla Construction.

Her aunt Wilma Brooks wept when describing Booysen's injuries to the Cape Argus.

"Her throat had been slit, all her fingers and both legs were broken, a broken glass bottle had been lodged in her, her stomach had been cut open... That which was supposed to be inside her body lay strewn across the scene where they found her," she said.

Police said Booysen died in hospital around 10pm on Saturday.

Her death provoked outrage from all sectors of society.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions was planning to deliver a memorandum to the Bredasdorp police station after Booysen's memorial service on Sunday.

Provincial Cosatu secretary Tony Ehrenreich said they would picket outside the magistrate's court on Tuesday to support Booysen's family and "display our disgust at this cowardly act".

The Young Communist League of SA described the crimes as "stomach churning".

"We call, as an immediate measure, for a police officer in every police station nationwide to receive extra training around rape and sexual violence," spokesman Khaya Xaba said.

"It is abhorrent that women reporting rape are often met with incredulous smirks by police. Police must be seen to be taking rape very seriously."

On Thursday, President Jacob Zuma described the crime as "shocking", "cruel" and "inhumane".

"Impose the harshest sentences on such crimes, as part of a concerted campaign to end this scourge in our society," he said.

"It has no place in our country. We must never allow ourselves to get used to these acts of base criminality to our women and children."

send that boy to us so we deal with him best. Our justice system will probabley give these monsters 5 years in one of our luxurious prisons where he gets free food, warm blankets and even se.x from other inmates.

we need to cut that thing off and ship him and his monster buddies to the same hell they put that poor child through.

REAL men do NOT force themselves on women. these monsters are NOT men.

With all due respect sir this happens and then you credit god for her being alive long enough to name her rapist?

Dzel: I don't believe this: " next you will be saying this happened for a reason .... #shakes his head with disbelief#" - WHAT. That is exactly what you were doing ad infinitum while "debating" mommaC earlier. You went on and on and on about her clothing, the fact that she was in a tavern (NOTE NOT a bar, but one of very few recreational spaces in that sad town) and heaven knows what other absurd attemots to absolve the rapists. Unreal.

Oh gosh here we go again; I wonder what school did you go to and how you got your Matric cause clearly reading and understanding are not your forte.

Here I am talking about the religious perspective or belief that says of does things for a reason when bad things happen but when positive things happen he suddenly works miracles.

On the other thread nowhere do I mention her clothing, none of us know what she was wearing at the time. Its a mystery to me when you got that from. What I spoke about though was her being in a tavern at night and refusing to go home when she was asked to. I did not blame her but what I said is she was playing a game of Russian Roulette.

Do you want me to draw pictures for you to understand what I said and what I didn't say Robin; stop being hysterical and start reading properly so we don't have these unnecessary exchanges.

How many persons have been raped in the past, and no visable action was taken to ensure security and safety on our streets at night? Are there police patrols during the night or are they confined to their respective charge offices awaiting a call that warrants their presence?
Suddenly, simply because of this recent graphic description of the rape victim, everyone appears to want to get involved, even Tony Ehrenreich, who, it seems want to 'seen' as fighting for justice. Where was he during other rape reports? Is it because it did not get such a lot of publicity?
With the death penalty abolished, hard labour should take its place and these rapists/murderers should be treated as wild animals, and shamboked when not fulfilling their daily tasks. Let them earn the air they are breathing and be an example to other would-be rapist what they could expect for such a hideous crime. My condolences go out to the victim's family and friends, and may they receive comfort in our Lord Jesus Christ.
