AS the Afcon soccer tournament comes to a close, a production team is putting the finishing touches to the dance and music extravaganza for the closing ceremony.

Celebrity choreographer Somizi Mhlongo said the closing ceremony would be somewhat different - a transition from the opening that had had a traditional theme, with the new show assuming a more urban, contemporary feel.

"This will be a portrayal of a very young and futuristic Africa, with technological elements," said Mhlongo, He added that the closing would also be a celebration of African unity, with dance moves inspired by styles from across the continent, but still aligned to the tournament's theme: Celebrate Africa -The Beat at Africa's Feet.

The first performance, titled Dust Dance, is expected to pay homage to African ancestors with a soundtrack featuring the voices of artists including Sibongile Khumalo and Zonke Dikana. At the rehearsals in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, about 300 dancers practiced against a city backdrop adorned with images of metal rubbish bins, minibus taxis and streetlights.

"I think we have a really good show in the making," dance queen Lorna Maseko said.

The closing ceremony will be showcased at the Afcon final on 10 February at National Stadium before the final game. -mahopoz@sowetan.co.za
