How nurse 'raped' a patient

A NURSING sister at a Bloemfontein hospital testified in the Bloemfontein High Court about how information on a terminally ill cancer patient who was allegedly raped by a male nurse had come to her attention.

Elizma Oosthuizen told the court that on October 15 2011 she was on duty at the National Hospital when the alleged rape victim, aged 50, told her that she had been raped.

"She didn't tell me when it took place, and how. The victim alleged that a female nurse had pinned her down while a male nurse raped her."

Oosthuizen said patients who were terminally ill were kept in separate wards alone. Lights were switched off at 10pm and only the nurses' station and wards were lit.

Male nurse Kodisang Michael Moema has pleaded not guilty to two charges of rape. It is alleged that between October 14 and 16 Moema raped the woman in her hospital bed.

It is alleged that she was penetrated in her vagina and anus.

The woman had reported the incident to her husband, who then alerted the police, after the hospital personnel had failed to report the matter to the authorities.

The woman was later moved to the nearby Medi-Clinic, where she died on November 26 2011.

The trial continues.
