DJ Sbu makes a dream come true

BLESSED is the hand that gives - this is the motto popular musician and presenter Sbusiso "DJ Sbu" Leope lives by.

Yesterday, the Metro FM DJ went to Katlehong High School in Ekurhuleni where Kutloano Modise matriculated.

Modise, who passed matric in 2009, received a bursary from the Sbusiso Leope Education Foundation to further his studies.

The foundation teaches young people from disadvantaged schools the importance of education.

"This foundation is meant to help young disadvantaged kids. We are here to motivate and inspire them that through hard work anything is possible," said DJ Sbu.

Modise, a University of Johannesburg logistics student, will graduate in March.

He was recruited by the foundation in 2010 after DJ Sbu and his colleagues visited the school to motivate pupils.

"In 2009 when Sbu came to our school, he told us that anyone who passed with high marks will get a bursary. I wanted to be that one student, " he said.

Katlehong High was Gauteng's worst performing school in 2010, but improved its matric pass rate to 85% last year.

Principal Frances Ngwenya said: "My educators are fired up and they had promised to increase the pass rate. We are going for a 100% this year".

I like it when he motivates the students to have intellectual swegg and not focus more on material things like Izikhothani.

I like what DJ Sbu is doing. What makes me like the most is that DJ Sbu went all the way at school and obtained a Diploma in Electrical Engineering. So he puts his money where it will really make a difference. What I do not like though is that the Company that he works for - SABC TV and Radio- does not support these initiatives as they do not employ young people who have tertiary education coupled with talent, so these young stars get discouraged. The biggest highlight for this is that most peolpe at SABC have matric as highest education which is a demotivational factor for young stars who are persuiting Performing Arts as career. It is also not clear why SABC does not encourage these uneducated presenters and DJ to go and obtain tertiary education that is inline with their line of duty. This can also help in making SABC perform Financially as they are only big in numbers of listerners. Bigs up Sbudah!!!!

People are so ungrateful and can't appreciate. Some of you guys here can't even give a R2 coin to a car guard yet you are shooting down a guy who is giving a full course bursary to a needy student. It's not a must or his job to do so. Where he got the money definitely not any of your business. Truth is it's legit and he's doing it out of his own will. Great job by these guys. I know Lupi has been doing it for some time with school shoes and Spikiri a few days back also? Let's give credit where it's due.
