'Even if you straighten your hair, you will never be white' - Zuma

Jacob Zuma claims there is a new generation of young Africans who are trying to adopt other lifestyles and even trying to look like others

President Jacob Zuma delivered a controversial speech in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, during which he lambasted young black people.

There was a new generation of young Africans who were trying to adopt other lifestyles and even trying to look like others, he said.

“Even if you apply any kind of lotion and straighten your hair you will never be white,” Zuma said.

Instead, a person lost dignity and ubuntu, and was also likely to lose respect and love for his fellow human beings, Zuma charged.

He said black people should stop adopting the habits of other cultures.

As he talked, the audience of thousands – attending the annual commemoration of the induction of Inkosi Sibongiseni Zuma – laughed and applauded.

It was Jacob Zuma’s first public appearance since being re-elected ANC president in Mangaung a week ago.

Amongst other things, Zuma described people who loved dogs more than people as “having a lack of humanity”.

He claimed that spending money on buying a dog, taking it to the vet and for walks belonged to white culture and was not the African way.

On marital problems, Zuma said families should resolve issues instead of running to religious leaders.

In future, Zuma said, every December 18 there would be a gathering in KwaNxamalala, near Impendle, where the youth would be educated about the importance of preserving African culture.

“We normally have this day (the commemoration) on December 26; from next year we are going to bring it forward to December 18. We need to use it to correct each other and protect our culture,” he said.

The president showered residents with gifts including groceries, wheelchairs, blankets and lawnmowers.

One family was given a four-roomed house and a bed.

Reacting to Zuma's comments on pets, National SPCA spokeswoman Christine Kuch said she could not comment on Zuma’s statement as she had not heard him speak, but added that many South Africans felt deep compassion for their animals.

“We cannot have compassion for animals if we do not have compassion for children and the elderly,” she said.

Kuch said care given to animals, in most cases, benefited people.

“If donkeys are better cared for, they are in better condition to carry water or carry a child to school; when dogs are taken to vets for vaccination, it protects people. Caring for an animal and a person goes together.”

Zuma is known for making controversial comments. Just recently, in an SABC3 television interview in August, he said it was “not right” for women to be single and that having children provided them with “extra training”.

He was speaking about his daughter Duduzile’s marriage, saying: “I wouldn’t want to stay with daughters who are not getting married. You’ve got to have kids. Kids are important to a woman because they actually give an extra training to a woman, to be a mother”.

Some of the comments are funny and I am loving them, people are hellbent to defend their use of fake something something, and they think who ever dares express any dislike deserve to be stoned to death, but truth is even keeping your african hair, it gives no one any licence to be unclean while hiding behind being natural, my guess is that those who take much offence in such statement is because it hits closer to home, and they depended too much on such fake wara wara to look rather "beautiful".

"21st century didnt change who we're we still african Somaar."
This man is on form today. Thankyou. A thing to consider is that since 1800, and especially in the last 40 years, the world's population has grown huge, and the days of my culture, his culture are coming to an end rapidly.
The thing of the media, is that they will take things entirely out of context and the mood that it was said in, twist it, and then print something that has no relationship to what was said. On the other hand Zuma is like a chameleon who says different things to different audiences (to keep a fragile country together), but the downside of this is that we are directionless. That makes people unhappy.

@NubianQueen, did you not know that Zuma will always remove competition as he sees it as threat? We used to think that Juju was not smart but Zuma superceeds that, he has to outdo everyone in everything NEGATIVE within the anc, even there was corruption under both Madiba and TM, but both leaders were not behaving as if its a normal thing to be corrupt, ie they were not arrogant about being corrupt and demanded respect for being corrupt in fact they never stand on the podium and demanded respect from their subjects. When critics were leveled at them they took them on their stride in TM's case he sought to make his views know to all by his weekly writing on that news letter published on anc's website, Madiba was humble, everyone felt they had to give him respect on the basis of his humbleness,uZuma is just an arrogant corrupt fool who is always putting his spokesperson in conflict with the public as he has to clarify his BS comments, I don't think which is most offensive ie, his singing or comments.../

@Kusheshe, the only ppl who are supporting Zuma have same values, morals as him, McCauley is white version of Zuma, thankfully for white SAns they are not religiously indoctrinated ie they don't need/use church as much as black folk do so they can completely cut off any association or influence of ppl like McCauley in their communities. Unfortunately for majority of us as we are indoctrinated into believing that we should question authority even when that authority doesn't bother to disguise his being devious, such as that mboro person and pastor Zuma here,it is only us black ppl who can call these ppl leaders and even spiritual leaders I put that down to indoctrination of not questioning authority, authority which is manipulated and abuse to our disadvantage. Anyway worse is still to come, as the post Manguang pirates are now set to silence the voice of the youth, Zuma said the youth will be dealt with, I wonder who is next on the line after they successfully silence the youth or re-indoctrinate and brainwashed them into surrendering their future to them for squandermentation.
