@ Tasto - Luke 18:18-20

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

Luke 18:21-23 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

It is easy to criticize. But I think a better approach is to present a well thought out path to the future which would benefit our children. Whoever can do this will succeed. None of the parties are doing this, they are only capable of squabbling like children. This vacuum is dangerous, as it allows for the Idi Amin, Hitler, Mugabes of the world. It is my hope that Mr. Ramaphosa /Mr. Manual and the National Planning Commission move urgently with confidence (Zuma being just a figurehead.)

Like I've been writing on this blog all along, from Mandela to Zuma, there has never been visible transformation in our lives from apartheid to 2012. I call on all normal ANC supporters to demand for a change in the set-up of the NEC at Mangaung, which currently comprises of broerskaps (Exiles). Otherwise we are heading for Zim-incarnate, and a prospect of civil strife is very real

Lets start with the level of education or "edication" that you are talking about, who is H V Vervoert and P V Botha.

So the anc is trying to close the gap by not being able to supply books in 2 provinces while the WC has the best pass rates and best model schools. Your anc is keeping the voters like yourself uneducated or should it be unedicated like you would say. You see the uneducated are more gullible and can not make up their minds to know that corruption is wrong.

vampire1- Of course they would attack JZ, if there was a state of emergency they would have all been hunted down and murdered. At least JZ and his govt can allow that level of tolerance, which we never saw from the NATS. Saying that though, you have to admit JZ is doing himself and the ANC no favours at all. I (and my family) fought in the Struggle and we are yet to see (economic) freedom. I would support anyone who advocates for the removal of the current NEC at Mangaung, and you should do the same. I would support the ANC for life

Firstly, there is no new story here. Mandela gave R 2 million, half went to Zuma and the other half went to King Goodwill Zwelithini. Mandela gave away this money because he too was given almost
R20 million by "well-wishers" (companies that decided to establish a Mandela Family Trust for the benefit of Mandela's children and grandchildren).

Of late we are seeing more and more "eplossive revelations about Zuma". But a closer look will reveal that these are controlled and sustained "revelations" that are not new at all. These so-called revelations are a mischievous trick by the fourth estate to dictate to ANC members as to who they should vote for.

During ShabirShaik's trial, the state alleged that Shabir gave Zuma R 2 million as corrupt payments, Shaik revealed Mandela as the source and that there was nothing corrupt about Mandela giving to Zuma some money to help pay off some debts. Zuma's home was quoted at R 1.3 million, after receiving aR 1 million from Mandela, Zuma applied for a R 900 000 bond, that is R 600 000 more than the quoted amount for building his home.

We are going to see more and more of this recycling of old stories, Zuma is again going to be subjected to a trial by the media, a phenomenon that started in 2003 when former National Director of Public Persecutions Bulelani Ngcuka assembled senior black journalist to tell them "how corrupt Zuma was", also that he was not going to charge him but would leave him to the "court of public opinion to dry and die a political death".

Well informed ANC members are not going to fall for such cheap tricks by the media that already believes that they are "ruling this country". Even if one does not support Zuma's candidacy, I would urge ANC members not to use these media leaks as reasons for not voting Zuma into a second term, the danger of ANC members being controlled by nefarious media leaks is greater than Zuma's 2nd term. Following, swallowing and acting upon media leaks amounts to surendering the ANC to media vultures.

Zuma and the current NEC had been given a mandate by the Polokwane conference. A trial by the media undermines the rule of law, equality before the eyes of the law. Once we allow it to happen to Zuma, then it will happen to Kgalema and those that will come after them, slowly but surely it will lead to the death of the ANC and a reversal of any gains we have had since 1994.

One thing for sure the organisation is slowly eroded, no amount of defending will save it from itself.

**********************************************************************************************************************
Many of us, I mean true ANC members, just happen to know and understand things deeper than your avarage Sinudeity whose political immaturity and emotional outbursts are fueled by half-baked stories from the media.

Zuma is not a parasite but a victim since birth. Zuma was denied a proper childhood, proper and equal education because he is black. When he resisted racist and unequal treatment, he was thrown into prison wherein he served 10 yrs. He served 10 yrs, not because he committed a crime, but because the criminal regime did not tolerate anyone who talked peace, freedom and equality for all South Africans.

After his release, Zuma had to go into hidding because the criminal regime wanted him dead, all these things were done without regard for his level of education, nonetheless, educated or not, he remained a "danger" to the apartheid project. Zuma had to flee into exile, he only came back into the country when the ANC was unbanned in 1990. When he came back, he was almost 50 yrs old, no job, no profession, no pension and no compensation for illegal arrest and imprisonment.

Yet Zuma is expected to live and die a poorman, just as the architects of apartheid had designed for him and millions of blacks. Zuma is expected to have an education, worse still, it is mostly those who benefitted from apartheid, people like Helen Zille and F W De Klerk who received a better education because they are white, people who got better paying jobs because they are white, people who had professions and money before they became politicians because they were white.

I refuse to persecute and judge Zuma, Mbeki, Mandela and other freedom fighters using the same scale I use for the privilleged whiteman. Even Mandela would have retired a pauper had he not been given loads of cash by foreign govts and companies who felt a bit guilty for apartheid. Codesa or Tutu's TRC should have made provision for those who were wrongfully imprisoned to receive the same benefits such as houses and pensions, their time in prison was done in the service of the entire South African populace. Zuma, Mbeki, Mandela and others were supposed to receive houses, pensions and land as a start.

Whiteman still has it nice. Even Mugabe realized it too late that indeed the terms of the Lancaster Agreement were only binding on the blackman's side, hence he did the honourable thing and confisticated the land from the thieves, murderers, enslavers and colonizers.

@Garanteni, apologies my friend....I'm not frustrated though. I do take criticism and for the ANC to improve, yes they must be criticise but not insulted. @Solutions, why should I vote for DA if I may ask? They didn't do much other than attacking the ANC and Zuma. They must come up with something. You know to me DA is Helen Zille. Do they have deputy president no. Y am I going to vote for ANC, when I come from we only got electricity around 1999 and running water and sanitation around 2004...my high school was a mud school but now it is a modern school. The service delivery to the whole of SA won't happen over night much it will happen and I think only the ANC can do that. I was also encouraged by the Census 2011 results. There's an improvement but not as fast as we want it to be. When it comes to the education of our kids my questions to you will be, what are you as a parent (if you do have kids) doing to assist? Do you attend school meetings? Are you part of the SGB? If yes, thats a good platform. At the end of the day, nobody is perfect and I won't comment much about Zuma and his wives plus children because I'm not familiar with his cultural practices and believes and therefore I can not judge him on that although I know that he's not the first man to be a polygamist and he's not the last one. Shaiks was found guilty for the bribe he paid, as stipulated in the report.

It was found a few weeks ago, that the Reddy person paid for JZ's bond, as stipulated in the report.

Yup and so the cycle of abuse continues, the sorry tale of many a post-colonial African country! Just because the colour of the oppressors skin changes, doesn't make it any more acceptable I'm afraid. It is exactly that attitude of self-entiltlement and blatant selfish disregard for one's power base that has kept this wonderful continent back and has caused, and is still causing immeasurable suffering.

How can being a well connected freedom fighter justify mass tax theft, fraud and corruption? Hell if I had been an ordinary desperate youth who grew up in the townships of the 70's and 80's and faced the might of the Apartheid regime, with just stones, petrol bombs and serious risk of persecution - I would be incredibly disillusioned with how things have turned out. Still living in my matchbox house/shack, my kids with a lesser education than I received, no hope of employment, rampant crime, escalating cost of living, shambolic health care, a govt that still shows no regard for the majority of its citizens...I would be be very pi$$ed off!

Yet as long as those who were living in comfort in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, London and even safe in the protected confines of Robben Island - are helping themselves to the spoils and milking this country for every cent possible, then I don't mind that! Even though I am now poorer, hungrier and more desperate for freedom than ever before? Because they deserved it, for it was not them who had to face the Buffels and Caspers?????

I'm sorry but your logic is flawed. How much longer can you and the anc keep flogging this tired old donkey? Time for change!!!!!

*****************************************************************************************************************

I agree with you on only one point; that "The anc of today is definitely not the anc of my forefathers". The then ANC of your forefathers was not in govt, the terrain has drastically changed and the chhallenges are totally different from what "your forfathers" faced.

The ANC, in its entire history, has had many phases and faces. There was a time when the ANC was like a cat on the couch (docile), but the formation of the ANCYL by Tambo, Mandela and Lembede radicalized the ANC which was faced with more brutality and repression by the racist white minority regime.

The current ANC leaders, not a 'bunch of gangsters' as you wrongly allege, are faced with a variety of challenges. In the past, it was easier to have an ANC that was seen as very morally upright because they did not have access to the same amount of resources as the current leaders are.

I have always argued against corruption, but also argued successfully that the democratic dispensation has placed our liberators at temptation's door. I always refer to Cde Zuma as a perfect example of how the past dictates the present and the future. Had Zuma not been denied an equal opportunity at life by successive white and racist minority regimes, maybe he would not have become a politician at all. Zuma has always said that he would have become a teacher, priest or lawyer had he gone to school.

Our democratic system limits the term of office to five years, internal party democracy also does not guarantee anyone a future deployment. So those who find themselves deployed for five years, they are to make the most in that five years, first they feather their nests, second they try and use the power they have to try and cling to power, that is human nature. Couple these things with a past that denied you an education, profession and business opportunity, then you have a recipe for disaster. Even if the liberators where not ANC, the same would still happen.

That is why I am arguing that those who sacrificed their lives in the quest for freedom where supposed to receive various forms of compensation so that they do not need to resort to other means to guarantee a good life after a shortlived political deployment.

It is easier for our white politicians and our young naive and uninformed black politicians to unfairly judge and criticize those that are in power now. Our white politicians who did not fight for freedom where only benefiting from the unfair, unjust system, by the time they joined politics, they already had a profession, a house and money.

Our young black politicians such as Lindiwe Mazibuko are beneficiaries of the struggles waged by Zuma and others, hence they went to multi-racial schools without being discriminated against, now they are free to join the DA and insult their liberators.

Hence I am saying, we were supposed to atleast level the playing field and compensate those that were wronged through wrongful imprisonment, exiled, denied an opportunity to live a normal life because they were busy fighting for our freedom.

Only Mandela was able to retire with no concern for tomorrow because some white people felt guilty and established a trust fund with almost R 20 million. The state spent almost R 29 million in ugrades, hence I am incenced when that liar De Klerk says "I only received R 100 000 worth of security upgardes. Yes, he already had a house with a wall, electric fence and cameras by the time the state came with upgrades. That is why in the 90s we did not complain and label Mandela "corrupt" when he accepted upgrades worth R 29 million.

The current levels of corruption has roots in the unjust system that created freedom fighters, who in turn did not have a normal life of education and a good well paying job. Anyone of us, put in that position with similar circumstances, would behave the only way, human.

My children will never be ashamed of me, they will be proud that I stood for something I believe in.

*********************************************************************************************************************
I am saying that corruption is bad, very bad. As I said before, I deal with matters related to corruption everyday since my days as an investigator for the state and now as an independent consultant. In my 15 years of service, I have come to dig deeper to understand why corruption happens the way it does.

In most cases it is deeply rooted in greed. But there are other reasons as to why our politicians are found too close to the cookie jar. Since I have been a member of the ANC for 30 years, I have studied the trends and also researched on why many liberation movements, whose morals and values drove their struggle are found wanting on matters related to clean governance.

If you listened to Graca Machel a few days ago, she mentioned some of the things I have always argued about. She indicated that the corruption problem has gripped many liberation movements around the world and also in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Angola. Those who gave themselves time to look at root cause of the problem came to understand the underlying reasons.

People who were imprisoned or exiled, people who were denied a normal life from birth, denied an equal education, equal opportunities in sport and could not gain any meaningful employment are bound to be tempted when put in a position of power. Many of these freedom fighters in the different countries I have mentioned, they only started working through a deployment after liberation, some as old as 50 and above.

My main argument is that those who were imprisoned (wrongly), and exiled, as part of reconciliation and promotion of good gorvenance, were supposed to have been put in a position that would have ensured that when they occupy certain offices, they do not see the office as the only way they could own a house, car etc.

That is why the report about Zuma indicates that "financial institutions had to bend backwards in order to approve a bond or loan for him". Not only is his credit record an issue when it comes to being granted a bond, but his age will also come into play, a 59 year old applying for a bond would have to repay almost 4 times to what would be required from a 24 year old.

Remember, at 59 you are just a year away from normal retirement, at which time you must have finished paying off your bond. Now if a bank has to give a bond to such an old person, a security guarntee is required, hence Zuma had to rely on a friend like businessman Vivian Reddy to stand in as surety.
My argument is by no means geared at promoting corruption, but for all of us to look broadly at at factors that might have led the current state of affairs. That is why I am arguing that maybe we should have leveled the playing field so that financially, Zuma and Zille were not so far apart.

But the past that denied Zuma a normal life at the same time favouring Zille, affording her a life of privillege as a white person cannot be undone in a decade, we need to pull together. Are you all not surprised that no matter how we cry, things continue to go wrong?

Maybe as a country, we were too moved bu Tutu's tears at the TRC we just hugged and kissed, wrongly believing that all would "well" but we forgot to address the real problems, now we are stuck with the fruits of the seeds planted almost 20 years ago.

Much as you think and probably believe that young succesful black professionals got where they are today though their OWN hard work, I also believe it was made possible by the struggles waged by Zuma and many others who fought for equality, which was denied to them as young black children in the 30s, 40s, 50s all the way until the early 90s when apartheid was eradicated from our statute books.

I am sorry for confusing you, never was it my intention to do so.

The story in the Mail & Guardian is not particularly original. They just recycled an old story. For a while Madiba was concerned that Zuma's financial woes would interfere with his political duties as an ANC office-bearer. @JohnStone

My sincere thanks for taking the time to rationally explain your point of view I genuinely appreciate it, likewise for your 30 years of devotion towards research on corruption.

Admittedly you will be far more qualified than myself to discuss its causes, effects and solutions but I disagree that we must just accept it as a natural phenomen, caused ultimately by greed and perhaps the denial of basic civil liberties. Even if it is part of the normal course of events that occur following the cataclysmic occurrences of something as life changing as emancipation from oppression, shrugging our shoulders and saying "Oh Well" just isn't good enough!

With the legal, political, public and economic infrastructure that the anc inherited and our once steadfast and fair constitution, which Mandela so proudly promulgated, the people of South Africa should have been protected from this cancerous affliction affecting those too close to the cookie jar. Unfortunately because of the deep scars that racial oppression caused, the euphoria brought on by the dawning of a new more inclusive chapter in our history and a tidal wave of national fervour sweeping the 'new' nation - ordinary S.Africans took their eye off the ball and lost focus while those we voted in with trust and hope, slowly and subversively, went about enriching themselves.

There is no excuse for that!

The results of this too, are on par with the evils of the previous crooked regime...in fact, generally speaking there is no difference whatsoever. Besides skin colour and origin, which our constitution determines insignificant anyway! What we had pre-94 was a socio-economic minority group (who just happened to be white) statutorily oppressing the majority, what we have today is another socio-economic minority group (majority who are black) economically (corruption/cadreism) and intellectually (lack of education) oppressing the majority.

So then after 46 years of anc rule, can we expect much of the same that happened after 46 years of NP rule? Will the children of our children still be looking at our history and leaders with scorn? Only now with far less working infrastructure, opportunities and hope - all eradicated by this perpetual cycle of oppression and economic exclusion, unbreakable because we were too slack and useless to do anything about it?

I for one my friend, will not sit back and accept that and say "Oh Well, it is a natural phenomenon and should be tolerated." Some of us have already made that mistake once in this country, only realising the truth when it was far too late and I will certainly do my very best to not let that happen again! Freedom fighter or not - all the people of this country deserve better!

Whoa there, easy now! This is merely a communication of my viewpoint...I'm allowed to have one still aren't I?

In my defence (direct quotations)...

You - "Since I have been a member of the ANC for 30 years, I have studied the trends and also researched on why many liberation movements, whose morals and values drove their struggle are found wanting on matters related to clean governance."
Me.....Since you have been a member of the anc, you have researched morals and values and studied associated trends pertaining to them. How long have you been a member?

You - "People who were imprisoned or exiled, people who were denied a normal life from birth, denied an equal education, equal opportunities in sport and could not gain any meaningful employment are bound to be tempted when put in a position of power."
Me....As far as my understanding goes, GREED is a natural phenomenon that occurs in humans. Perhaps not philosophical and maybe not physiological, but certainly psychological. Corruption is just a by-product of greed!

I hear what you are saying regarding corruption, never doubting your stand against it and respect your many years involved in understanding it; so I am sorry that you have twisted my criticism and disagreement into a perceived personal attack. However, let me clearly state that unlike those despicable people who continue to rob this country of a decent future, I do not have to resort to lying and as a result my argument is always well supported by the actions and inactions of those in power!
