An application to have the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) liquidated and the organisation’s bank accounts frozen was handed in at the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday, according to a report on Wednesday.

According to court papers, close corporation Z2 Presentations claims that the ANCYL owes it R12.8 million, Beeld reported.

This figure includes R7.6 million for services rendered at the Youth League’s controversial Bloemfontein congress in 2008, when Julius Malema was elected as leader.

The rest of the debt stems predominantly from interest accrued since 2008.

Marius van Rensburg, Z2 Presentations’ lawyer, confirmed on Tuesday that the court papers had been submitted.

“The papers have not yet been given to the ANC Youth League, but the sheriff of the court has been asked to do so urgently this week,” he said.

The Youth League’s acting leaders could not be reached by Beeld for comment on Tuesday.

Keith Khoza, ANC spokesman, said the party was not aware of any liquidation application.

According to him, it seems highly unlikely that the ANCYL would be liquidated.

“They have no assets, and the ANC lends them the office space they occupy.” 

When asked by Beeld how they could enter into agreements with service providers if they had no assets, Khoza said they had "probably hoped to collect funds”.
