MEC dies in car accident

FREE State MEC for health Fundiswa "Fezi" Ngubentombi died in a car accident at the weekend.

Ngubentombi was with her two bodyguards, two other people and a minor child when the accident happened on the N1 outside Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Health Department spokesman Mondli Mvambi said one of the bodyguards, Sergeant BC Motaung, also died in the accident, while the other passengers sustained injuries.

Before being elected to the Free State Provincial Legislature in 2009 Ngubentombi was a teacher in Parys and Sasolburg.

She served as a ward councillor from 2003 to 2006 and then as executive mayor of the Metsimaholo local municipality from 2006 to 2009.

She was a member of the provincial executive committee and provincial working committee of the ANC in the Free State since 2008 and was also a member of the national executive committee of the ANC Women's League.

Ngubentombi was married to Zandisile Churchill Ngubentombi and is the mother of five children. She was appointed MEC for health in February 2011 after she served as MEC for public works and rural development from 2009.

She was born in 1965 in the Eastern Cape town of Qumbu, where she matriculated. The department said her dedication and commitment to the work of the Free State provincial government will leave a lasting legacy to ensure a better life is achieved for all.

ANC spokesman Oupa Khoabane sent the party's condolences to Ngubentombi family and friends. Khoabane said the organisation had lost a dedicated member. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
