Service delivery protests soar

Serious municipal protests doubled in 2011 -- and more than 77 percent of them were accompanied by violence

Beeld reported on Friday that this data has emerged from data service Municipal IQ’s latest flashpoint monitor, which has just been released.

The Western Cape took the lead for the first time, after nearly a quarter (24 percent) of the 160 protest actions took place in the province.

The Eastern Cape had 14% of the protests and Gauteng, the Free State and Mpumalanga all had 12 percvent.

According to Municipal IQ, most of the protests took place in winter, from April to June.

Metro areas, where 32.5% of protests took place, were more peaceful.

The percentage of protests in informal settlements — 37 percent - was unchanged.

Municipal IQ said Cape Town performed the best among metro councils in the productivity index, followed by Johannesburg and Durban.
