Two spent cartridges found in the office block of Limpopo education MEC and the province's ANC chairman Dickson Masemola have been sent for ballistic tests in Pretoria.

Limpopo department of education spokesman Pat Kgomo, said yesterday the two cartridges were discovered in a container in Masemola's office block at about 4pm and its origin and motive for its presence are still unknown.

"Masemola is of the view that we should review and strengthen the security situation around his office to ensure that things that have the potential to compromise his security do not occur," Kgomo said.

According to Kgomo it was still unclear whether the cartridges were brought by someone from outside or by an internal person. He said one had to pass the security guards to gain access to the premises.

According to police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto, a visitor who was attending a meeting in the building saw something in the toilet bowl.

The guards were notified and removed the items, only to discover they were two spent 9mm cartridges.

"Nobody has reported any shooting there but the cartridges have been sent for ballistic tests in Pretoria," Otto said.
