Forensic tests on foetus

THE foetus stored in a fridge freezer for three months by a Daveyton mother has been sent for forensic testing.

The Ekurhuleni woman kept the foetus, claiming she was waiting for the police to collect it as evidence in an assault case she had opened against her

former lover.

The assault charges against the former boyfriend have since been withdrawn.

She also wanted DNA tests to be done on the foetus to prove to her then boyfriend that the child was indeed his.

She obtained the foetus from the hospital under the pretext she was going to bury it. She was 14 weeks pregnant when she miscarried.

In October, police took the mother of two in for questioning and also took the foetus as evidence.

"The foetus was taken for forensic tests to check DNA. We want to ensure that the baby is the woman's.

It is illegal to keep a foetus," said Colonel Thomas Maupa.

He said the woman could face charges once police investigations were completed.- lerato@sowetan.co.za
