Top officials face arrest

THE net is closing in on certain officials of Limpopo provincial government departments that have been placed under administration following allegations of fraud and corruption.

The warning, issued yesterday by Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko, said they were investigating at least 39 cases in the province.

Ramaloko said three of the cases had already been concluded and had resulted in charges being brought against eleven people, including expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema.

Malema and some of his accomplices have been charged with various counts, including fraud and corruption, money laundering and racketeering.

Their cases will be heard in the Polo-kwane Regional Court on November 30.

Ramaloko said the remaining 36 cases were still being investigated. According to Ramaloko, 10 of the cases relate to fraud and corruption in the department of roads and transport, three in public works, seven in education and 19 in health.

The departments of education, health, roads and transport, public works and treasury were placed under administration by the national government following allegations of financial irregularities.

"The cases we are investigating implicate a large number of people. It will not be safe to reveal their identities before finalising our investigations," he said.

Ramaloko also said there was a possibility that those implicated in the three cases already concluded might feature in other cases.

Malema is currently out on R10000 bail. He has been charged with money laundering. His business partner, Selby Manthata, is out on R40 000 bail.

Manthata and their associates, with Kagisho Dichabe, Hellen Moreroa, Lesiba Gwangwa and Makgetse Manthata, are accused of fraudulently acquiring a R52-million tender for the project management unit of the province's roads and transport department. The rest are also out on R40 000 bail each.

Ramaloko said the police were determined to root out corruption in Limpopo.

Meanwhile, the Forum of Limpopo Entrepreneurs yesterday welcomed the developments.

Forum secretary Siviko Mabunda said it was an indication that the "chickens are coming home to roost".

"We have done a lot of spade work in terms of exposing the corrupt activities happening in government departments in this province and we feel it is time that those involved face the might of the law," Mabunda said yesterday. - frankm@sowetan.co.za
