Now the learners want protection

PUPILS at Tshedimosetso Secondary School in Jouberton, Klerksdorp, had a traumatic experience when one of their schoolmates was stabbed to death allegedly by a fellow pupil on Wednesday last week.

North West police said 20-year-old Vusi Joseph Sebegilwe was stabbed in the chest with an Okapi knife by his 18-year-old friend, who accused him of being part of a group that murdered his cousin last week Sunday.

The incident took place in the afternoon shortly after the pupils had finished writing an examination paper.

Fellow pupils now fear for their lives since the stabbing.

Two weeks ago at Matlosana Secondary School, also in Jouberton, a schoolboy was stabbed to death on the school premises.

Now the learners want protection. Some of them feel it would be better if there were security guards at schools, while others think the best way would be to come to school armed in order to defend themselves.

Sebegilwe's aunt, Johanna Sebegilwe, claimed his life was in danger long before he was killed. She said on Monday last week the police knocked on her door looking for him.

"They accused him of being an accomplice in the murder of a local man who was stabbed to death last Sunday," she said.

But Sebegilwe was not arrested after it was discovered that he had nothing to do with the murder. But on Wednesday his friend accused him of being one of the people who killed his cousin.

The deceased lost his parents when he was still young.

Police spokeswoman Pelonomi Makau said the suspect was expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court soon.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old teenager appeared in the Tembisa Family Court last Wednesday on charges of reckless and negligent driving, driving without a licence, culpable homicide and using a motor vehicle without the owner's consent after running over and killing two pupils in Kaalfontein, Midrand, last Monday.
