The Home Affairs department has denied that it is planning to deport 30 illegal foreigners held at the Lindela Repatriation Centre, west of Johannesburg.

“No such plans exist as alleged by both the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the People Against Suffering, Oppression and Poverty,” spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said.

The Sowetan reported that at least 42 illegal immigrants held at the centre for more than 120 days would be deported on Tuesday, as a court application to prevent this would be heard only next week.

Home affairs director general Mkuseli Apleni reportedly ignored letters from the SAHRC demanding the release of the foreigners.

Mamoepa said the department had not received letters from the rights group, nor had it received letters informing it of the legal action.

“As soon as such summonses are served, the department will indeed respond comprehensively to the allegations at the appropriate forum.” 

He said when dealing with illegal foreigners, the department operated according to the law. Mamoepa said home affairs had noted that some foreigners did not co-operate with the department.

“These include among others, refusal to provide details of their nationalities, or to co-operate with officials of their respective high commissions or embassies.” 

Mamoepa said the department would ensure all foreigners detained at Lindela were well treated, while ensuring they were not in the country for more than 120 days.
