Top council man accused of corruption
THE Gert Sibande district municipality in Mpumalanga has suspended its disaster management manager in connection with allegations of corruption and theft, misuse of a garage card and council vehicles, and collecting money meant for renting out the local community hall.
Vusi Motha is alleged to have spent R111647 on petrol between September 2011 and June 2012. Over the same period he is alleged to have used a council vehicle allocated to his department to transport his family.
He is also accused of illegally pocketing R19500 from community members who hired a local hall.
Motha, a member of the ANC's Gert Sibande regional executive committee, admitted he was on suspension but denied any wrongdoing. He said was not given notice of the intention to suspend him.
"I could have responded to those allegations," Motha said.
He said his position entailed a lot of travelling, which also required him to be present in areas where there was an emergency.
Motha said when he was appointed to his position in June there were no clear policy guidelines relating to the use of council vehicles. He also denied that he had used council vehicles to transport his family.
He said claims that he took money from the community for hiring a local hall were inaccurate.
Council spokesman Zakhele Shiba declined to comment.

If petrol costs R12.00 a litre and he spent R111 647 then he bought 9304 litres. If his vehicle uses 10 litres per 100km then he travelled 93040 km in 10 months. Which is 9304 km per month - assuming 22 working days in a month that is 422 km a day - two thirds of the way to Durban every day. This guy was stealing petrol - from us.Report Abuse

The only way to deal with this corruptions is to start with the Head, get it right. It all started with the Current President, he must be brought to Court and charged, thereafter I think he will take corruption seriously and make sure the ministers are not cought like him. He must be charged and the rest will follow. We look like a Banana republic.Report Abuse

@sibuyim - yes I know you can claim per km. However I think this guy was using a card to buy petrol and not claiming a traveling expense.Report Abuse

Sometimes I am bit cautious about condemming these corrupt officials. 'cause I think if I was in that position myself the temptation would be there, have you ever being without food for so long, what is the first thing that one does when food is presented? Binge?....exactly these poor souls when they see that they have the power to authorize or approve transactions worth millions and in their entire life have never seen 10000R, what do you think its going to happen? In anyevent ayi qali namhla sana.... the previous regime was worse.Hang on now, I am not in anyway condoning this corrupt practice or what the rulling party is doing.
The worst thing that the ANC can do is to think that it will rule untill Jesus comes back, Jesus might come back soon, very soon for them. Never in their wildest dreams did the NP think the ANC will rule this country today, no they did not see it comming. The ANC should not even for one minute think this will not apply to them. Like we say ekasi 'One-day is One-day'
