FOLLOWING the recent spate of violence in the KwaMashu hostel between the IFP and its splinter party, the National Freedom Party, the leadership of all political parties in KwaZulu-Natal have agreed to meet over the killings.

On Monday the multi-political party oversight committee, led by provincial MEC for transport, community safety and liaison and ANC deputy provincial chairman Willies Mchunu, met in Durban.

They resolved to convene an urgent meeting of leaders of political parties represented in the hostel.

This breakthrough meeting between local leaders and community structures is to take place next week in Durban with the oversight committee.

"This will be used as a yardstick to assess the situation on the ground and to strengthen relations among local political party leaders," Mchunu said.

"The multiparty committee condemns incidents of political violence and appeals for restraint," Mchunu said.

"The committee decided to engage the local leadership of the KwaMashu hostel to cascade down the spirit of peace and tolerance.

"This will ensure that as the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) prepares for voter registration for the by-election, the environment allows free political activities.

"We welcome the commitment of all political parties and their leaders to work for peace."

Meanwhile, the NFP yesterday said it had not decided on the future of the party's two senior leaders - councillor Mzonjani Zulu and national working committee member Bhungu Gwala - who are facing two separate murder charges.

Party secretary-general, Nhlanhla Khubisa said the future of the two would be decided by the disciplinary committee after receiving inputs from the provincial and the national leadership.
