He was testifying in the Johannesburg High Court where Booi Makhubela, 50, and his son Rodgers, 26, are facing 40 charges of kidnapping, rape and assault.

"He [Rodgers] was asleep when we arrested him after months of looking [for him]," said Nathaniel Zwane, who was a detective at the time.

"We later established his whereabouts and went to arrest him. When we got there he resisted arrest and tried to make arrangements that we be paid a bribe to leave him alone.

"He called his mother and asked her to give us R2000 or R3000 so that we can leave him alone," Zwane said.

The alleged rapes happened between 2008 and 2009 when the two accused allegedly pretended to be taxi drivers and would target women waiting for transport.

Zwane said when he arrested Booi on August 11 2009, he was not aware that he was implicated in so many rape cases and had only wanted to question him in relation to one case.

The trial continues.
