Sascoc wants R400m for Olympics

THE SA Sports Confederation and Olympics Committee says it needs about R400-million to prepare athletes for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This was disclosed to Parliament's portfolio committee on sports and recreation by Sascoc president Gideon Sam and senior manager Ezera Shabangu.

Shabangu said the amount was required to help Team SA increase its capacity to win more medals at the Olympics by setting up a training camp in Europe in the run-up to Rio de Janeiro.

Sascoc chief financial officer Vinesh Maharaj said they had spent R19-million on the London Olympics, and a further R16-million on the Paralympics.

It received an additional R14-million in sponsorships for the two games.
