'Doc' nabbed for illegal abortions
A 56-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested for allegedly operating an illegal clinic and performing illegal abortions in Pretoria.
The Chinese national's arrest followed a tip-off by members of the public after they saw people, mainly the sick and frail, frequenting the property in Sinoville.
Police spokeswoman Captain Pinky Tsinyane said police, accompanied by officials from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), visited the house on Friday and arrested the woman after she failed to produce a practice certificate.
She said they also found lots of medication with Chinese labels which was confiscated "to determine whether it was registered with the medical control board when brought into the country".
She said the suspect was facing a charge of impersonating a medical practitioner.
The arrest was welcomed by HPCSA's registrar and CEO Dr Buyiswa Mjamba-Matshoba, who urged the public and medical practitioners to "report these fraudsters".
