DNA tests rule out suspect charged with rape of granny

THE family of a 94-year-old woman who was raped in front of her two great grandchildren fear for her wellbeing following the withdrawal of a rape charge against the 28-year-old suspect.

Most of these high profile cases Police are just forced to arrest before they investigate...now look.

You investigate then arrest not other way round.

my feeling is that the two grannies were rapped by the same person you get him and you solve both cases.

Tpaz, unfortunately that is in America. In SA one can get arrested simply on a complaint lodged against you. Cases are remanded for years while the police are investigating. I've always advocated that investigation should come before arrest. It will make our prisons emptier, the small fry will be dealt with quicker, and the courts will have more time to deal with the serious cases.

The SAPS should do their work properly maybe the alleged rapist was at the right place at the right time, because it is clear he has been wanted for other crime related matters.

When the investigating officer informed us last week ...The great grandmother was raped in the village in August.

------------------------------------------

The positive - at least things appear to be improving. A turn-around time of about 2 months. A nice change from waiting years for forensic results.

OmoT, don't get too excited. The turnaround time is now faster because forensics only investigate cases now where the cops have a suspect. No suspect, no forensics.

Didn't know about that. Still, how often have we read about cases that took months and months and years just to get results because of backlogs, no staff, inefficiency, nepotism, corruption etc etc?

I chose to remain optimistic ;-)

OmoT, I'm glad for the accused that it was so quick. Imagine having to wait years for results with such a false accusation hanging over your head.
BTW, did you know that the top forensics job in SA is still open because the only person in SA qualified to do it is a white woman, and SAPS refuses to give the position to a white?

"When the investigating officer informed us last week that there was nothing linking the suspect to the rape, gogo has not been well. She took it very bad and it affects her life. She now feels like people will turn against her and think that she was lying and this is not good for her fragile health."
=======================================================================
The woman is indeed old and fragile; it may not be easy for her to remember who committed this crime against her, therefore reasonable people in the community will understand!!! It is a good thing though that the other guy was not the culprit for his sake and his family.

A week later, an 84-year-old grandmother was ra.ped in the same vil.lage.

NPA provincial spokesman Natasha Ramkisson confirmed that the charges were withdrawn because Ndlela's DNA did not match the DNA found on the crime scene.

Did they compare the DNA of both crimes, to find out if it is the same perpertrator or not........ Some things are not rocket science (but unforutnately we talking about Mzansi SAPS)

so true, there are lot of ra.pe cases where the ra.pe kits have not been collected and no forensic testing being done due to "staff shortage, machine not working, the whole shibang........

I guess in grandma's case SAPS, NPA wanted to prove a point......... How I wish all ra.pe cases can be treated with the same sense of urgency...............

I blame society for this; they always quick to jump to conclusion.

Some even suggested mob violence?

Now, imagine your heads in government? Disaster still

Yet you are quick to see the faults of others

Anyway, i wonder if Ndlela will ever remember what happened?

Police will always find a way to calm society

Poor governance, bad management.

It is soooo simple. If they are so intent on giving only blacks the job...

1) Identify only the very best black bio-sciences students (Grade A students and not a politician's brother/child/friend etc). They must sign a return of service contract for e.g. 5 years
2) Send them overseas for training/Hire the best forensic experts and bring them here
3) Train the students
4) Set benchmarks - minimum of x tests to be completed accurately per day/week/month. bonuses can apply if they exceed the benchmarks.
5) In the meantime, fill the current vacancies with anyone who is qualified - even if they are white. God knows there is enough work for everyone in this crime ridden country.
6) Days of backlogs over

Obviusly the solution is our use of DNA, but it can be flawed and contaminated and let the culprit free, not that Ndlela dont deserve his freedom, but as the saying goes: Water always find its level. Why was Ndlela a suspect in the first place?
