Two trains set alight
Services in the Mabopane corridor are shut down until further notice
Two Metrorail trains have been set alight in Mabopane, the company said on Friday.
Five coaches carrying passengers caught fire at Kopanong station while in Akasia only one coach was burnt down at 10pm on Thursday.
Both trains were enroute to Mabopane from Koedoespoort , Metrorail spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng said.
Mofokeng said the cause of the fire was unknown.
Several other coaches were vandalised.
No injuries had been reported.
She said they were not able to assess the extent of the damage because of the rain, but it seemed severe
Commuters were advised to organise alternative transport as the services in the Mabopane corridor were shut down until further notice.
“It will be impossible to operate trains in this corridor due to the severe nature of the damage of these trains and the electrical overhead cables... commuters are advised to make their own transport arrangements,” Gauteng Metrorail manager Tembela Kulu said.

I constantly get buffled why our people resort to such measures. They destroy what they already have to gain what exactly? When will they take pride in what they have and work at developing it further?Report Abuse

where are we gonna end up blaming people? Some people who were in that train boarded the train around 15h00pm yesterday @ Silverton station and the train was burned @ around 22h00 while they were still in the same train? people bought train tickets to get to their homes ealier and not for the train to just stop in the middle of no where.Report Abuse

That route is very much frustrating, I used it at some point and I lost my job "thanks to metro rail". It stops in that area always without any person telling you why, and when will the train takes off.Report Abuse

Metrorail mst suspend their services in Mobopane lines for the whole year en reopens it in 2014.People dont understand hw metro are trying so hard to provide the best service they can.Power failer is nt metro fault bt spoornet. The maintanance of the railway lines together with electiricity are nt Metrorail responsibility instead are Spoornet.Metrorail did nt call any 1 to come en board a train,bt people come voluntaritly.Mabopane commuters mst learn to hv a patient that commuters frm JHB to PTA hv.If is a powerfailer we used alternatives transport until the technicians restored the power on track. If we burn the trains, what are we going to used to transport us.It costs millions of Rands for Metrorail the purchase a new coaches. The Price of Coach is estimated to be R3 Million if people are nt aware.Report Abuse

I agree with you, is not the first the time, even in mamelodi they once set alight trains. In that case metrorail had to shut down Mamelodi gardens route and it became very difficult for people to use taxi's.
Please, lets stop vandalising our property because at the end we will suffer.
