Kidnapped woman jumps out of car to escape
A woman was rescued after being kidnapped, allegedly a man who had paid lobola for her
The woman jumped out of a Land Cruiser when the driver reduced speed as he was approaching an accident on the N2 near Esikhawini on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police Captain Thulani Zwane said
She ran towards police and the driver made a U-turn, returning the way he had come at high speed.
“Police became suspicious and gave chase.”
The vehicle was stopped and searched a few kilometres from the accident.
“The woman who jumped out of that vehicle reported to the police that she was kidnapped by the driver, from Esikhawini FET College, and he had threatened to kill her.
“It is further alleged that the suspect claimed he paid lobola for her and she was rejecting him,” Zwane said.
The 30-year-old man was charged with kidnapping and intimidation and expected to appear in the Esikhawini Magistrate’s Court.
Police had been attending an accident where a minibus taxi driver knocked a traffic officer over, injuring his leg. The driver was charged with attempted murder and reckless or negligent driving.
