'The Spear' unbanned

Oct 11, 2012 | Sapa | 16 comments

A RULING on the classification of The Spear artwork was overturned by the Film and Publications Board's appeal tribunal yesterday, the regulatory body said.

This means the painting is no longer subject to a rating of 16N, which the board introduced in July.

The Goodman Gallery appealed against the classification on September 17 on the grounds that it was "impermissible and unsustainable".

The Spear is a painting by Cape Town artist Brett Murray, depicting President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed.

As it should have been all along. This has to have been one of the more idiotic demonstrations of false visions of grandeur I have encountered.

Good shot. I guess if mampara Simelane was still in the NPA, he would have channeled for the re-instatement of the previous judgement. Zuma and Gwede-hulle bite the dust..............

A young who is more important that Zuma, Prince Harry was exposed on tabloids naked - though the royal family was dissappointed - they never striked for the pictures to be strictly sensored because it's self sensored. WHO IS THIS ZULU MAN ZUMA to venture into the industry he does not belong to?

He can't run the country so he must back-off from those who use their brains to express themselves over current burning issues - artists.

From a previously marginalized tribesman, typical, what does being Zulu has to do with Zuma's decisions, if you feel inferior don't expect Zulus to do likewise, you may have respect for your "royal" family but at your own peril, don't judge Africans on European standards, to some of us, Elizabeth is only important to the English speaking people.

Zuma was made president for the wrong reasons, and Motlanthe will be ridden by Julius Malema like George Bush riding Tony Blair.

I'm not disrespecting Zulus at all but unfortunately Zuma is making me judge him , first by his incompetence and secondly by his maladministration of the highest office in the country. Unfortunately, the notaion of attacking an individual's perfomance in any sphere (sports, culture and government) is preceded by that individual's tribe name. You cannot take that away from grumbling people. The same happens to Zille (white), Maharaj (lekula) , Malema (lepedi), Magashule (Mosotho), Bricks Mudau (livenda), the list is endless.

So don't act smart with me............................
