It takes a week for two extension officers to calculate the production capacity of a known areal extent. Rotation is Greek to the beneficiaries. It is, surely, a sad state of affairs. I came across one farmer in the eastern side of the country who was willing to augment his order with the produce of the neighbouring farmers (Women who did not know how to get their produce to the market). All what the farmer wanted was for the department to sit in when he drew the agreement with the village farmers. Did we (I was an independent advisor) show up? No. Because the Department could not guarantee the constant supply by the female farmers. Another item these the farmers were asking for was a storage room/house/shed for their implements and sampling harvest. I do not know what happened to the project. Report Abuse

That is a good comment.
Farming is a damn difficult job and it takes years for a farm to become established enough to overcome the hurdles that Mother Nature throws at it. One of the biggest problems is the lack of understanding about 'swings and roundabouts'. Just because you had a good year this year, that is no guarantee that you won't have crappy years for the next two. Funds have to be available to cover the crappy times.
My biggest problem with these initiatives is that they try to do everything by committee. That cannot work. Rather do a co-operative approach where the tools are shared but each family group has their own little patch that they are responsible for. Hell, the committee approach doesn't work in any format in any industry in any part of the world, trying to do it in something like farming is just looking for headaches Report Abuse

Fools talk before they think. Many such like projects have succeeded because the beneficiaries were prepared to work on a fulltime basis. Actually I prefer to refer to these "projects" in a simple language, "Business", where these have failed, the people are only "visitors" at the site for a few hours in a week but they expect the business to grow.
In Nkandla, Makhumalo has succeeded in getting together village women to plant veggies for themselves, surplus is then sold at the market and she did that without govt sponsorship long before her husband became president, the veggies self-help business is still on as we speak.
The municipalities or any sponsor must ensure that for each govt initiated business in these impoverished communities, there is enough training in Project Management, Business Management and Sales & Marketing, we have a lot of matriculants sitting at home smoking tik and resorting to crime because they are idle. easy, I need food someone needs to grow it.
Retail stores and farmers all over the world register daily wasted food products; some immaterial while others are of the Earth Farms garden and you still talk about supply and demand?
----------------------------------------
Natural food is not enough for the population, the waist of food does not total the amount of hungry mouths, how difficult is this to understand.
Nature supply food to all – society need to just consume enough to give the body the necessary nourishment for the day.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Then you will need to get society to stop breeding like rabbit, nature will never by its own be able to supply for the current humans on earth unless a few billion die. Why do you think the good Father gave us brains to do mass production.
Maybe you should advise him that w.hites did not create the Earth Farm and its garden; they are not farm carriers.
Hurricanes and human destruction come and go but the Earth Farms vegetation remain; otherwise you can also see by constantly required Garden maintenance in homes, schools etc. that the Earth Farm will continue to feed its people through vegetation.

Why should I google poverty – I see it daily. And is cattle food? Didn’t know that you can cultivate cattle?
I agree that training and mentoring is of importance, but there also exist other factors that have a hand in these failures. You see, in SA, people are made to believe that one should get everything for free, or without any input. Any business man / woman out there will know that the latter is simply not true as input = output. Now, besides training etc, this is where a major problem lies... and more specifically it comes down to core values. Everybody wants to have money, but they forget that it takes hard work to obtain such. Also, a business venture does not show a profit from the word go, but it has to be cultivated over time to really create wealth - the second rule: input immediately = real profit not so immediately. There is no quick fix or short cut, lest to mention the idea that wealth is created overnight. But still people think that money will fall out of the air when such projects are started. Sometimes we may envy rich business people, but I have seen behind the scenes how hard these guys (and girls) work and how much they sometimes sacrifice in order to reach success. The average citizen do not understand this. And please do not ask the government to teach them, they cannot even provide basic education! Report Abuse

I do not know what happened to the project.Report Abuse

Realy I dont understand why government & black people do these things it ambarasing to us black people because it makes us look like failers. Most white farmers are running well but gov don't want to invest in them mxm!
I dont blame the black people as such I blame the anc who are incapable of running a country and lack the understanding of how to uplift and improve the lives of others. These "farmers" were not given adequate training and skills to handle this enterprise. Nor were they trained on how to run a business. This is not a black mans failure but an anc failure.
.......................................................................................
I do blame them at times because most of the people running these farms are so called business people(BEE, tenderpreurs etc) & you find out they dont invest back on the business but instead throw expensive "networking' parties. They rely to much on gov to give them money so business fails & you dont see the so called white business people doing all that.

@Winilen - I have also seen bla.ck people who can be excellent farmers, with a love and understanding of farming, albeit that education in scientific farming is lacking - that is where it must start, huge investment in agricultural colleges. Farming is no longer something that anyone can do. It is simply a question of these projects not being properly planned and the result is that bona fide emerging farmers lose confidence and are portrayed badly. It does not have to be like that .Report Abuse

!!!Sinudeity!!!Would we still starve if it was DA in government? ANC is corrupt and is run by uneducated persons. So, since DA is not corrupt and is run by educated people who should be able to administer food supplies, there should be no problem when they are in power?
Just because developed countries do things wrong does not mean we should adopt. Besides, are you sure the food supplies in those areas you mention is adequate and that the poor are also catered for?

They subsidize farmers. Giving them funds to develop their farms, but in turn, they have to lower the prices of their crops.

Even though I personally believe that subsidising crops is unfair practise for developing countries, who now have to compete with subsidized prices.

Of course. Its those principles that build houses, provides jobs and supply you with food.

Unfortunately the 'earth farm' doesnt provide enough food for the current population of earth. Therefore you would need farmers to increase the food supply. That or kill 1 billion people.

We South Africans we still have a long way to go and a long lesson to learn and we need to change our attitudes to change, IT IS TIME WE LEARN TO DO THINGS ON OUR OWN AND NOT RELY ON HANDOUTS.In reality if this government can re-open the AGRICULTURAL SCHOOLS that can contribute a lot, it is sad and I remember how these colleges were closed especially to places like Transkei it was like taking bread out of our mouths. Why were they closed?

On Media 24 Gwede Mantashe is reported as warning w.hite farmers that if they don't cooperate in transfering land and skills to emerging farmers, ther will be a Marikana in agriculture. I assume he does not know of these failed projects, and the reasons for their failure. Heading towards a Zim situation where the government fails in its programmes and then blames the wh.ites, then creates a violent free for all land grab programme to appease the masses, leading to economic meltdown.Report Abuse

Kon-TikiThat is a good comment.
Hell, the committee approach doesn't work in any format in any industry in any part of the world, trying to do it in something like farming is just looking for headaches

Fools talk before they think. Many such like projects have succeeded because the beneficiaries were prepared to work on a fulltime basis. Actually I prefer to refer to these "projects" in a simple language, "Business", where these have failed, the people are only "visitors" at the site for a few hours in a week but they expect the business to grow.In Nkandla, Makhumalo has succeeded in getting together village women to plant veggies for themselves, surplus is then sold at the market and she did that without govt sponsorship long before her husband became president, the veggies self-help business is still on as we speak.
The municipalities or any sponsor must ensure that for each govt initiated business in these impoverished communities, there is enough training in Project Management, Business Management and Sales & Marketing, we have a lot of matriculants sitting at home smoking tik and resorting to crime because they are idle.

Why do you think the good Father gave us brains to do mass production.

corneliusMaybe you should advise him that w.hites did not create the Earth Farm and its garden; they are not farm carriers.
Hurricanes and human destruction come and go but the Earth Farms vegetation remain; otherwise you can also see by constantly required Garden maintenance in homes, schools etc. that the Earth Farm will continue to feed its people through vegetation.

True. That why these tenderpreurers are failing so much to lift the counties economy because they only think of what the gov can give to them only... I also strongly believe that small business can play a big role in this country, but they are not doing that because these people are greedy & dont know how to run a business

And please do not ask the government to teach them, they cannot even provide basic education!Report Abuse
