Jub Jub judgment begins
The Protea Magistrate's Court has begun handing down judgment in the murder trial of musician of Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala
The Soweto courtroom was packed as Maarohanye and Tshabalala entered the dock, both wearing black suits.
Lawyer Mlungiseleleni Sovithi, for Tshabalala, asked Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi if the two could sit down, an hour into judgment.
Nemavhidi granted the request, indicating that judgment would be a lengthy process. More than 20 witnesses testified in the murder trial.
The two were allegedly drag-racing in Protea North in March 2010 when they crashed into a group of schoolchildren. Four boys were killed and two were seriously injured.
Maarohanye and Tshabalala are charged on 10 counts each, including murder, reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and failing to asses the injuries of the victims. Both accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Reading a summary of evidence given, Nemavhidi said both tested positive for cocaine and morphine.
The post mortem revealed that the school children died of head injuries and multiple body injuries. One of the boys died of a broken neck, he read.
Friends and family of the schoolchildren and of Tshabalala and Maarohanye were present.
Police officers were at the entrance of the packed public gallery to ensure order and silence. They had asked a few people to leave the court and asked others not to enter, as it was full.
