THE deputy mayor of uMzinyathi municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, Felamandla Mkhize, who is in police custody facing two murder charges is still earning a monthly salary.
Perhaps the reason he is still paid is because he is not yet proven guilty, but my question is why do they need to have a deputy mayor????? or his function was to commit those crimes?? Report Abuse

I don't see the problem with the idea of 'presumed innocent until proven guilty'. I do have a huge problem with it taking years and years to do so Report Abuse

Sowetan if you were intrested in giving us information, you should have quoted act/law that is broken by paying someone who is facing murder charge instead you chose to play with our emotions. Being charged does not mean one is guilty. Report Abuse

It is now clear that it not only ANC members who kill each other, but even IFP & NFP. The DA will be next in KZN, fight for position & money is the root. Report Abuse

Mgaraji, agree with you, but fully agree with MommaC. Maybe special courts for government and municipal criminal cases so the case can get finished quickly, and no one gets a salary for 5 years and is then found guilty. The expense for the special courts will surely be a lot less than paying people for years for nothing. Report Abuse

Mr Hassan is talking hogwash, your hands cannot be tied by a letter from an absent employee's lawyer. The mayor due to his incarceration is unable to honour his contractual obligation to the municipality and can be dismissed on those grounds, we cannot be paying his salary for years whilst the case drags on. I can draft a letter for you.... Report Abuse

If the man is in custody,it means he is absent from work. Indefinately paying a man who is awol and not productive to the organization at all is surely illegal.
The only time that a man can be paid while absent from work,is when he is on official leave.
Before this,I have never seen police detention treated as official leave in my life.
They cannot fire him for fear of being sued but surely they can implement the principle of no work no pay for the duration of his detention. If he wins,he can sue for wrongful detention and loss of income. Report Abuse

When someone pushes you, you push back. How come Mr Hassan did not send off his own lawyers letter saying that his client was not at work and could not be paid like @Mrazane and @Warren have pointed out. If someone becomes sick and can no longer fulfill his obligations at work he can be dismissed - why not someone who is in jail without bail. Report Abuse
