Limpopo favours Motlanthe

The Limpopo ANC is in favour of Kgalema Motlanthe taking over as the party’s president at its conference in Mangaung, provincial secretary Soviet Lekganyane says

The province supported Tokyo Sexwale for deputy president and Fikile Mbalula for secretary general, Lekganyane said in a statement.

This followed a meeting of the African National Congress’s provincial executive committee in Limpopo on Monday afternoon.

The province recommended that Thandi Modise retain her position as deputy secretary general, and that Mathews Phosa stay on as treasurer general. The position of chairwoman should go to Thenjiwe Mtitso.

Lekganyane said the meeting unanimously decided on the top six positions in the ANC and nominated a pool of 85 national executive committee (NEC) members.

“Throughout, the province branch nominations have already commenced and so far all processes are going very well,” Lekganyane said.

Among those on the NEC list were Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale, Limpopo public works MEC Thabitha Mohlala, Limpopo treasury MEC David Masondo and Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

Nominations for candidates for the ANC’s top leadership positions opened at the beginning of the month. The national elections take place in at the ANC’s national conference in Mangaung in December.

Limpopo will send 574 delegates to the conference, out of the total of 4,103 delegates attending.
