Johannesburg - Black graduates have more difficulty finding work than whites after leaving university, Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande said on Thursday.

He said 55% of black graduates from Stellenbosch were unlikely to find a job in their first year after receiving their degrees, compared to 12% of white students.

He said 29% of black graduates from the University of Witwatersrand could not procure employment in their first year after university, compared to seven percent of white students.

While further data was not available, Nzimande argued that the results could likely be found across higher education in South Africa.

"Most black youngsters do not have the family and other connections into the labour market that are generally enjoyed by whites and the few, more affluent blacks," Nzimande said in his prepared remarks at Walter Sisulu University.

The minister said historical inequality and poverty determined access to education and the ability to achieve academically.

Nzimande said this was despite efforts by the government to transform education.

He said historically black universities also remain disadvantaged in terms of resources and quality of academic programmes.

This research needs to be qualified for it to make sense. Experience tells me black students tend to lean towards the Arts and Social Sciences whilst whites tend to gravitate towards Sciences with commerce being the most balanced in terms of race. Sciences train you for specific fields which tend to have more vacancies to absorb new graduates whilst Social Sciences and Arts are general degrees and do not train you for anything specifically.

Let’s encourage our children to take up Maths and Science as school subjects; that would allow them to study the right degrees which in turn will make it easier to find employment. There is logic to what appears to be madness.

Ethics, Philosophy and all these funny subjects will not improve your chances of getting employed, if anything you will have a better understanding of unemployment.

Why do we always have to work for someone when we can do something on our own .take me for example i don't have a degree only a diploma in Accounting but am working for myself . what am trying to say is those of u who have Degrees and completed your articles try starting something of your own and don't be worried about the profit because in everything you have start somewhere . there many people out there who need people to help them with their books. look at Sizwe Ntsaluba ,Grant Thornton and many others besides the big 4 ,have you ever asked yourself where they started .

You are correct. In a healthy society independence from slavery is encouraged. But working for someone in SA has been make to be more prestigious. We have a long way to go in learning how not to expect employment from others. It takes a lot of discipline and courage to start your own business and the majority of us do not have those qualities.

Already the affirmative action policies discriminate severely against whi.tes. What Blade does not do is give actual numbers, and as Dzel says, the percentages for the different courses. There are overwhelmingly more black than wh.ite students at universities now, which would explain the skewed percentages. Maybe Die Lem also does not understand the concept of percentages, like the COSATU spokesman of two days ago.

There are obviously some very creative accountants around. or perhaps one should refer to them as book-chefs for their prolific cooking of books, but these may not have credible legitimate qualifications. Firstlly, are we comparing applles and pears here? A degreee in Re1igious Studies or Engliish Liiterature isn't going to get you work - no mattter what your collour.

Secondly, why is Blunt actiing like this is something that he has just found out? He is the Minister of Higher Education. The fact that some universities don't have decent faci1ities is HIS FAULT.

Lastly, if he asked, he'd find out why indiians and whiites get work. It is because they work in their study area whilst studying. I personally know a black woman who got work immediately upon finishing her accounting studies - why? - because she volunteered at a charity doing basic bookkeeping whilst she was studying so she had something to put on her C.V. and a reference to vouch for her work ethiic and honesty

Kolobe, maybe we should not work in percentages, but in figures. For eg every 50 blacks getting into varsity to study accountancy, say 5 white.s are allowed to enter. Out of the 50 blacks, 25 get work, and out of the 5 white.s 4 get work. Obviously the percentage of white.s getting work is higher, but the number is much lower.

It is common knowledge that black students entrance requirement into higher learning institutions are lower than those of other students. This in my opinion has a few consequences.
1. The black student who just scrapes through matric will not cope with varsity/tech and will in all likeyhood drop out or fail the first year.
2. The black students who do pass will have the stigma attached that they have just scraped through their degree or diploma based on the lower pass marks required of them.

The governement are the one who control and institute the education policies and systems, To get the black students to be more marketable they need to up the required pass mark and make all student entrance requirements equal. This will rectify both my points above.

In my case I studied logistics management and our graduating class of 47 students was broken down as follows
5 white
8 Coloured
34 black

The following number of us got jobs straight after graduating
4 white – 80%
5 coloured – 62.5%
23 Black – 67.64%

If you put this into percentages then it will look bad, but it actually distorts it, as fails to take into account the difference in student numbers.

Of the 32 jobs available actual placement can be broken down as follows
White- 12.5%
Coloured – 15.63%
Black – 71.8%

Charted accountants never struggle to find jobs, whether they are black or white.

Its because many South Africans, particularly black South Africans go and study useless degrees like bible studies, music, art, fashion design etc the so called BA's.

I cannot believe that 18 years later, Blade has only woken up to this logic on now. White people were clever enough to force their kids to study proper degrees - economics, business and law.

The ANC should of started a full scale program to try and significantly increase the amount of black people studying economics, business and law.

South Africa is overpopulated with black people that are educated with totally irrelevant knowledge.
