Footballer (16) dies at tournament
A DISTRAUGHT Limpopo family was expected to arrive in Durban late yesterday to identify the body of their 16-year-old son who collapsed and died during a soccer tournament.
Andani Kutama's team mates are said to be in shock and receiving counselling while awaiting a decision on the team's continued participation in the Metropolitan Sasfa U-16 Cup national finals at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
The president of the South African Schools Football Association, Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko, said Kutama, pictured, of Benny Sports Academy in Limpopo collapsed 13 minutes into play during a match against Freedom Park, a North West outfit.
"The medical emergency personnel on the field immediately removed the player on a stretcher and he was taken to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital where he was pronounced dead," said Kutama.
Safa president Kirsten Nematandani said: "We are deeply saddened by his death and send our condolences to the family."
Kutama's coach, Tendani Rasikhinya, said: "He was always positive and told lots of jokes. This is a huge shock and totally unexpected. We mourn his death."
Metropolitan chief executive Phillip Matlakala said: "To have a young life snuffed out so prematurely is tragic."
