CARTOON: Police help us get petrol

Fuel is being delivered to petrol stations with a police escort and some supermarkets are running low of stock

Retailer Pick n Pay has warned that it is running low on some goods at its stores due to the truck drivers’ strike.

“The effect is most noticeable in fresh produce and poultry,” operations director Neal Quirk said.

Despite contingency plans being in place, shelves at some of its outlets in the Johannesburg CBD had no stock. One store in Braamfontein had signs up warning customers that stock was low due to non-delivery of goods.

“Our suppliers are in a similar position and the situation could become worse should the strike continue.”

However, a Shoprite store a few blocks away had had no problems with deliveries.

As far as filling stations in the CBD were concerned, only one or two pumps were still supplying fuel at a Caltex garage.

A Total garage in Newtown was forced to shut after fuel ran out on Wednesday night.

“The last time we had a delivery was over the weekend. The fuel is finished now and no tanker has been coming in,” said a petrol attendant.

Another Total garage in Braamfontein was still operating. Fuel had arrived with a police escort on Tuesday, said a petrol attendant who identified himself as Aubrey.

The strike by thousands of truck drivers was in its second week. In parts of the country trucks had been pelted with stones and set alight. Pranksters sparked panic by sending out messages claiming additional attacks and marches.

In Ekurhuleni yesterday, a truck driver and two other people were in hospital after their truck was torched on the N12.

“The driver and his two co-drivers were seriously injured.... The three were battered by angry mob of striking truck drivers,” said spokesman Superintendent Vusi Mabanga.

The attackers ran away and no arrests were made.

Drivers want a 12% salary increase while employers have offered 8.5% for next year, and another 0.5% the following year.

Cry the beloved Mzansi. It's bad. Imagine when ambulances will be out of fuel or our Eskom is out of electricity as coals are not delivered at the power stations. You will die in an operation theather due to blackouts.

This Picture speaks thousand words.Yalo, you are the best, and you keep on improving every time.

TRT (Amabherete) must teach these hooligans how to obey laws of this country. These strikers don't fear ordinary Public Order Police (POP). When their companies retrench or fire them, they will be the one complaining about lack of jobs.

We haven't had so many problems in Pretoria.

Thankfully, the money is back in the ATMs. I had forgotten how damn hindering awkward it was to have to go into a bank every time I wanted money. Other than that, it hasn't really affected Pretoria much at all.

@MommaC, you can say that again. In the Pretoria East, everything is normal.

We seem to be a lot better at handling the various strikes than Joburg is - maybe because we are a lot more laid back and more 'maak 'n plan'.

mashima?

Why should always people have to fight for their needs until things went out of control. It is high time now every employer should ensure satisfactory to their employee without violence. This is tooooo much now. The employer can not just sit back and wait for this kind of situation.
