The official, Junior Winkel, still has a bullet lodged in his stomach.

Winkel is the Enoch Sontonga branch secretary in Thaba Nchu, while Mzwandile Phupha, who is accused of shooting him, was a member of Motheo region at the time.

Police kept a close watch in and outside the court, where there were two groups of supporters - one for Winkel and the other for Phupha.

Winkel said on February 4 this year he went for a meeting at Barolong Hall in Thaba Nchu, in the company of other party members.

Said Winkel: "In the hall we found Mpho Ramakatsa, his bodyguard and another man. A warning shot was fired in the hall and we ran out for cover. As we were running towards the gate Phupha fired one shot at us".

He said the bullet hit him once in his stomach and he ran to the back of the hall.

"I told Patrick Monyakoana, who was running with me, that I had been shot. He also turned back and ran away and I followed," he said.

Phupha's lawyer, Tebello Danster, accused Winkel and others of concocting a story against his client.

"You and your comrades concocted a story against the accused for your own political interests. You want to get rid of him in his political position,'' Danster said.

Winkel denied that there was a political plot against Phupha.

"There was no plot against him. We are not in the same position. He was a member of the region, while I am branch secretary. I have never fought or argued with him. I don't understand why Phupha carried a gun to the meeting," he said. - ntwagaes@sowetan.co.za
