Richard Brasher has been appointed CEO of Pick n Pay, the retailer said.
Brasher, 51, was previously the chief executive of United Kingdom retailer Tesco. He would take up his new position in February.
In the interim, the company would be run by deputy CEO Richard van Rensburg and chairman Gareth Ackerman.
Pick n Pay said Brasher had led a team in transforming Tesco into a global retailer, with a UK market share in excess of 30 percent.
He had been responsible for the company's entire supply base and helped bring about a supermarket loyalty programme.
It said Brasher's experience would put him in good stead for the smart shopper loyalty programme, the retailer's private label business, and its online shopping facility.
