A simple request was made to government to answer a few fundamentally important questions:
1. Who are the investors in e-tolling,
2. What profit margins are they making from this investment,
3. Who is going to run the toll collection process,
4. How are funds collected from gantries going to be split between paying of road infrastructure, agencies responsible for collecting fees and investors?
Simply put who has their hand in the cookie jar and how deep.
Instead of being transparent and ensuring the public knows how their money is going to be used and assuring us there is no suspect arrangements that are not in our interest government keeps telling us to pay.

China is building 40 + train lines up to 1000km in length (individually, not collectively) that hit speeds of 380kmh.
They're doing this over 3 years.
We got a little Gautrain not even 100km...that hits 160kmh...what a joke.

I travel with my wife and son every morning. I start by dropping my son at crèche, then I go drop off the wifey and work only then do I make my way to work. It takes me 15 minutes to drop off wifey at work, it takes over two hours to do the same distance using public transport – Horizon View to JHB CBD the JHB CBD to Home – using Metrobus so if she were to use public transport she would get home AFTER 19h30 every night and would be forced to use taxis then there is he safety to worry about.
Then there is the little issue of Metrobus going on strike every year guaranteed and when they do it is up to 6 weeks without buses.
Public transport simply isn’t an option; it simply is not a practical solution for some of us with families to ferry every day. Taxi strikes, buy strikes, buses not arriving on time or at all; these are realities of public transport my friend. I should not have to be forced in to using public transport just because there are some complicated financial arrangements in the background and government is forcing e-tolling on us so the lucky few can get rich at my expense.

It is becoming clearer that the problem is not who leads the ANC but rather it is the organisation itself that has lost direction and does not seem to understand the mandate they have from us the voters. Do you understand what the initial investment was, how in the current e-toll model the bulk of the money will be going to service providers and only a small portion will go towards serving the principle debt, do you understand why it will take close to 20 years to pay off the debt when there are cheaper and more effective ways of recovering the costs and paying off the debt.
The issue is not one of infrastructure development but rather how it is funded and how if e-tolling is implemented government will be robbing us blind using legislation and a threat of legal action instead of a gun?

No one is saying we should use the roads for free, what we are saying is there are better ways of recovering money spent. Recovery through a fuel levy will be cost effective, quick and efficient.
Can you explain to me why this is not an option as far as government is concerned. A 10c/l recovery will settle the debt in 5 years, it will take 20 years using e-tolling and we will end up paying much more to service the debt as the bulk of the money will go to the operator and investors. Does this make sense to you sir.
What is your objection to using the fuel levy to recover costs incurred?

Another way of looking at this is with the Gautrain project government had to buy property, rezone a lot of areas, dig underground tunnels, build a track that runs from OR Tambo to Pretoria via Johannesburg and Rosebank from scratch, build bridges, build the stations and buy the actual trains amongst others; all this cost a total of R 25bn.
With e-tolling all they did was add a single lane onto an existing road infrastructure so now instead of 3 lanes we have 4. They did not have to buy any property; no bridges that I know of have been built, no tracks laid and the total cost is just shy of Gautrain at R 20bn.
Does this make sense, you do the math? Add to this the insane collection costs. Report Abuse

I think a few people who support this thing are actually not from Gauteng, but let me tell you something. e-toll is going to have a direct bearing on Gauteng residents, that is given. but have you ever thought of other needs like food, tools and any other household needs that are manufactured in Gauteng, that are supposed to bre transported to different provices by truck and vehicles which are supposedly going to use the e-roads.

things will never change when there is nothing to enforce that change. An abusing husband will beat his wife to within a few breaths from death because he knows after she has recuperated she will go back to that abusive relationship without laying a charge.
The ANC is riding on two things; struggle credentials which they have exhausted in my book and the fact that they know there is no where to run to. When you hear someone who is running the country to the ground tell you I will be in power till Jesus comes you know there is no honest introspection and no will to change so you have to force a change.
I refuse to be held hostage by my race, I refuse to be forced into a corner by these criminals. R 203m to build Zuma his private palace complete with under-ground bunkers and a private clinic, a further R 1 billion to build a small town in Nkandla and this I have to fund. The man then turns around and tell us, sorry you have to fund your own infrastructure when the money to build these luxuries comes from me.
This is beyond poor governance; this government is showing me no respect, they are showing no regard for my well being as they demand money and money money out of me.
In the end it boils down to the lesser or two evils, to be fair issues I have with them by far pale the issues I have with the ANC. I would much rather return a white government in power than continue be taken advantage of by my fellow black people who continue to show me the middle finger every day. If we are to be honest with ourselves this is a no brainier; like I said I can't think of any reason why I should vote for the ANC beside my race. My mind is made, the DA has my vote as painful as it is to say this. I cannot in good conscious give the ANC another 5 years to destroy our country especially with Zuma in power.

2. What profit margins are they making from this investment,
3. Who is going to run the toll collection process,
4. How are funds collected from gantries going to be split between paying of road infrastructure, agencies responsible for collecting fees and investors?

I travel with my wife and son every morning. I start by dropping my son at crèche, then I go drop off the wifey and work only then do I make my way to work. It takes me 15 minutes to drop off wifey at work, it takes over two hours to do the same distance using public transport – Horizon View to JHB CBD the JHB CBD to Home – using Metrobus so if she were to use public transport she would get home AFTER 19h30 every night and would be forced to use taxis then there is he safety to worry about.
Then there is the little issue of Metrobus going on strike every year guaranteed and when they do it is up to 6 weeks without buses.
Public transport simply isn’t an option; it simply is not a practical solution for some of us with families to ferry every day. Taxi strikes, buy strikes, buses not arriving on time or at all; these are realities of public transport my friend. I should not have to be forced in to using public transport just because there are some complicated financial arrangements in the background and government is forcing e-tolling on us so the lucky few can get rich at my expense.

You should see how those trains work, brilliant technology but also dangerous as was shown when two of those trains collided but I am still stumped by the technology. Trains in china hover about magnetic tracks much like a hover-boat does therefore the train is hardly in contact with the tracks, Gautrain uses traditional train technology if I may call it that hence the difference in speed.

It is becoming clearer that the problem is not who leads the ANC but rather it is the organisation itself that has lost direction and does not seem to understand the mandate they have from us the voters. The ANC does not respect us and every decision or action they take is directed at serving individual and / or organisational interests.
We are told they are going to vote for Zuma for organisational unity; what about electing the best leadership to serve the interests of our citizens and country.
As much as this pains me, as much as I disagree strongly with DA policy and as much as it will hurt to me as a black citizen of this country to vote for the DA I have no option but to do just that. The ANC has exhausted all its struggle credential brownie points; I look at this bunch and find zero reason to vote for them, I struggle to come up with reasons to vote for the ANC so this time I am not going to be held hostage by my race.
When they continue to undermine me as a taxpayer and a voter I have no option but to vote for the enemy, the idea is disturbing but what choice do I have?

Do you understand the financial side of e-tolling.
Do you understand what the initial investment was, how in the current e-toll model the bulk of the money will be going to service providers and only a small portion will go towards serving the principle debt, do you understand why it will take close to 20 years to pay off the debt when there are cheaper and more effective ways of recovering the costs and paying off the debt.
The issue is not one of infrastructure development but rather how it is funded and how if e-tolling is implemented government will be robbing us blind using legislation and a threat of legal action instead of a gun?

No one is saying we should use the roads for free, what we are saying is there are better ways of recovering money spent. Recovery through a fuel levy will be cost effective, quick and efficient.
Can you explain to me why this is not an option as far as government is concerned. A 10c/l recovery will settle the debt in 5 years, it will take 20 years using e-tolling and we will end up paying much more to service the debt as the bulk of the money will go to the operator and investors. Does this make sense to you sir.
What is your objection to using the fuel levy to recover costs incurred?

Domkopp,Another way of looking at this is with the Gautrain project government had to buy property, rezone a lot of areas, dig underground tunnels, build a track that runs from OR Tambo to Pretoria via Johannesburg and Rosebank from scratch, build bridges, build the stations and buy the actual trains amongst others; all this cost a total of R 25bn.
With e-tolling all they did was add a single lane onto an existing road infrastructure so now instead of 3 lanes we have 4. They did not have to buy any property; no bridges that I know of have been built, no tracks laid and the total cost is just shy of Gautrain at R 20bn.
Does this make sense, you do the math? Add to this the insane collection costs.

I think a few people who support this thing are actually not from Gauteng, but let me tell you something. e-toll is going to have a direct bearing on Gauteng residents, that is given. but have you ever thought of other needs like food, tools and any other household needs that are manufactured in Gauteng, that are supposed to bre transported to different provices by truck and vehicles which are supposedly going to use the e-roads.Their price are going to increase nomakanjani. so one way or another you are going to be adversly affected too. so the best you can do now is support us. and futhi futhi, it should cross your mind tyhat if this e-thief is seen as succesfull here in Gauteng, it will easily be escalated to other provinces.

things will never change when there is nothing to enforce that change. An abusing husband will beat his wife to within a few breaths from death because he knows after she has recuperated she will go back to that abusive relationship without laying a charge.
The ANC is riding on two things; struggle credentials which they have exhausted in my book and the fact that they know there is no where to run to. When you hear someone who is running the country to the ground tell you I will be in power till Jesus comes you know there is no honest introspection and no will to change so you have to force a change.
I refuse to be held hostage by my race, I refuse to be forced into a corner by these criminals. R 203m to build Zuma his private palace complete with under-ground bunkers and a private clinic, a further R 1 billion to build a small town in Nkandla and this I have to fund. The man then turns around and tell us, sorry you have to fund your own infrastructure when the money to build these luxuries comes from me.
This is beyond poor governance; this government is showing me no respect, they are showing no regard for my well being as they demand money and money money out of me.
In the end it boils down to the lesser or two evils, to be fair issues I have with them by far pale the issues I have with the ANC. I would much rather return a white government in power than continue be taken advantage of by my fellow black people who continue to show me the middle finger every day. If we are to be honest with ourselves this is a no brainier; like I said I can't think of any reason why I should vote for the ANC beside my race. My mind is made, the DA has my vote as painful as it is to say this. I cannot in good conscious give the ANC another 5 years to destroy our country especially with Zuma in power.
