Zuma has edge in Eastern Cape

THE Eastern Cape campaign to replace Jacob Zuma as ANC president has been dealt a severe blow after the province's membership dropped by 35,000.

In January Eastern Cape had 225,597 ANC members, but after the latest membership audit, the province is now sitting at 187,585.

The results of the audit were released by the party's secretary-general Gwede Mantashe in Johannesburg on Friday.

These figures will be used to decide the number of delegates to represent provinces at the ANC's elective conference in Mangaung.

While the Eastern Cape numbers dropped, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal grew by 90,000 members during the same period - a huge boost to Zuma's campaign.

A closer look at the results show that the regions that suffered the biggest losses in this province were those understood to favour a change of leadership in Mangaung.

These include Amathole, which is yet to sit for its elective conference, Alfred Nzo and Buffalo City.

The ANC in Eastern Cape has blamed the decline on the formation of the Congress of the People (Cope), while Mantashe said this pointed to "serious organisational problems".

Some attribute the spike in the KwaZulu-Natal membership to the collapse of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
