Two life terms for killer-rapist
Convicted murderer and rapist Nyiko Ubisi is a danger to society, particularly women. With these words, Johannesburg High Court Acting Judge Harold Knopp sent Ubisi to two life sentences and an effective 22 years in jail.
Ubisi, of Tembisa on the East Rand, was found guilty of raping the then 18-year-old Keletso* in Tembisa in 2004.
The court heard that Keletso was assaulted and raped after going out with Ubisi and two other people to a party in Tembisa. After the party Ubisi, who was 17 at the time, booked into a hotel where he raped Keletso.
Ubisi's lawyer, Paul Leisher, had earlier asked the court to show mercy in sentencing Ubisi because he was only 17 when he committed the crime.
"This court will not consider this request because though the accused was indeed 17 at the time, he conducted himself as a mature person," Knopp said.
"He was hiring hotel rooms, was sexually active, sleeping in a back-yard room, drinking alcohol and, based on his own version, had fathered a child."
Knopp said Ubisi betrayed the trust the victim had put in him.
Ubisi was also convicted on two counts of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm as well as ammunition.
In 2008 he went to the flat of Nomonde Selaledi in Hospital View, also in Tembisa, and insisted that she drop a rape case she had laid against him.
Selaledi had earlier thrown a party for a friend, who later slept there with her daughter, who was eight years old at the time.
The girl testified that the three were asleep when Ubisi came to the flat.
The girl said Selaledi had an argument with Ubisi, which lasted about 30 minutes, about a rape charge she had earlier laid against Ubisi.
She said Ubisi wanted Selaledi to drop the case and when she refused he shot her five times.
"He then proceeded to the bedroom, where my mom was sleeping and shot her once in the head."
Judge Knopp said the fact that Ubisi went to Selaledi's house with a gun showed he wanted to kill.
On the murder charges Ubisi was given two life terms in jail, 10 years for rape, five years for possession of an unlicensed gun and seven years for unlawfully possessing ammunition.

All forms of crime are abhorrent, but in the recent past i have seen escalation of crime in this country being committed by foreign nationals. I have not heard a conclusive plan to address this from our state organs, particularly those in the security cluster. case in point, Corrie Saunders got killed by daring Zimbabweans (but we love them soo much as our neighbors). ET (cruel as he was) got killed by an arrogant Zimbabwean. In the Eastern Cape (East London) a Tanzanian held familiy at gunpoit before he got shot and fatally wounded. It is about time we (South Africans) spoke openly and demanded action from responsible authorities to act on foreign nationals that leave their own countries and come to RSA to rob, rape, sell drugs and hijack.Report Abuse

I dont understand when a court gives a person 2 life term sentences, are they saying we live more than once? are they saying if that person dies and Jesus come back and wake him up, they will jail him again?I thought we live once
