Three men were arrested after they allegedly robbed a Metrorail ticket office and blew up an ATM in Mofolo, Soweto, police said.
"Eight armed men held up security guards at gunpoint at the Ikhwezi train station and took cash at around 2am. They then blew up a nearby ATM and took money from it," spokesman Captain Kay Makhubela said.
A manhunt for the other five men was underway.
Police patrolling the area were alerted of the robbery and converged on the train station, Makhubela said. Some of the cash was recovered and the getaway car confiscated. The five fled on foot.
The three men, aged between 30 and 49, would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.
