Textbooks found at dump
Textbooks and teaching materials used for an adult education course have been found discarded in Modderfontein
“Hundreds of textbooks and other resources for the adult literacy programme, some still in wrapped boxes, stand abandoned in a dilapidated out-building in my constituency,” provincial DA finance spokesman Mike Moriarty said in a statement.
The textbooks were for use in the Adult Basic Education Training (Abet) programme and were found at the Modderfontein Cycle Park.
Moriarty said the textbooks and other materials were found in boxes marked for the department of basic education.
Basic Education spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said he was not aware of the textbooks, but admitted the department did have a service provider in the area.
He said the materials were “left-out”, extra materials that were left over after the contract had been fulfilled.
Moriarty said the Abet programme was important for providing South Africans who had not benefited from a decent education with skills.
“Abet resources abandoned in this manner is a slap in the face of South Africans who pin their hopes and aspirations on the programme,” Moriarty said.
