Six months on, collapsed RDP house not yet fixed

Sep 27, 2012 | Sibongile Mashaba Mpumalanga Correspondent | 13 comments

A 28-YEAR-OLD man is furious that after nearly six months his late grandmother's collapsed RDP house has still not been fixed.

BROKEN DOWN: This RDP house collapsed in March and has not yet been repaired.

Frank Mogane said this was despite him having reported the problem to the Mpumalanga department of human settlements.

Mogane's grand-mother, Austin Mogane, died before the house collapsed.

Mogane said the house at Moremela village collapsed in March and he reported this immediately.

"I was not at home when it collapsed but I reported it immediately and I was told officials would come to inspect the house but no one has come.

"I am forced to stay in my uncle's house in Kanana section ," Mogane said.

He said he was unemployed and could not fix the house himself.

The department's Freddy Ngobe said the damaged house had not been reported to the department.

But Ngobe added: "Reported cases are dealt with by forcing the contractors to repair the houses that were not built according to plan.

"If they refuse to do so the cases are referred to the special investigations unit to recover repair costs incurred by the department."

The government can be reflected in the quality of houses it builds.

(1) That's what happens when tenders are given to people who are unqualified to carry out the project
(2) That's what happens when free housing is given to unemployed people - they're not in a position to fix/maintain the property.
Solution - create employment opportunities & people will build their own houses which they'll be in a position to maintain. Has SA gvt heard of a saying "Teach a man how to fish instead of providing him with bread".

You get exactly what you voted for dude!

I agree with you there. How old is the house and surely if it is old its the owners responsibility to maintain but on the other hand if it is due to shoddy workmanship, which is more than likely the case, then the government should repair it. No doubt a tender given to a crony if the latter is applicable

Oh for goodness' sake! Fix it it for her! I'm sick of people demanding that government spoon feed them. At some stage we all have to take responsibility for our own lives and sometimes I resent that other people not only get their homes for free, but can demand that government also fix them.

I agree with Mesip - how do you expect to give unemployed people homes when they are unable to pay for services and maintenance? These people should never have been given the houses for free, instead, they should have been given guarantees of being able to stay in the house for a mimimal fee. How many stories have you heard regarding people selling their RDP houses then applying again with a different name? Or people that own more than one RDP house? It is supposed to be for people who earn R 3000.00 and less per month, yet I personally know someone who earns R 100 000.00 a year who has received an RDP house. And people wonder why tax payers are up in arms about free housing. Nobody ever appreciates something given for free.
