ANC man dies after shooting
An ANC councillor has died in hospital after being shot during a meeting in Welbedacht, near Chatsworth, in Durban
“Comrade Mthembeni Shezi died at RK Khan Hospital at 9am,” provincial ANC spokesman Senzo Mkhize said.
Shezi [also known as Msizeni Ximba], branch deputy chairman Sbu Mpanza, and ward committee member Bulelani Mjoli, were wounded by two unknown gunmen on Wednesday night.
The gunmen entered the hall during a meeting and fired shots randomly.
Provincial police spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge confirmed the shooting, at Imbaliyethu High School, and said the motive was not known at this stage.
Mpanza and Mjoli were in critical, but stable conditions in hospital.
Mkhize condemned the attack as “despicable”, and said it was the latest in a series of apparently politically-motivated incidents.
“The ANC deeply condemns these killings, which seem to be well-organised,” he said.
“We condemn it and we urge our law enforcement agencies to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.”
Shezi was a councillor and an ANC branch chairman.
