A WOMAN is in police custody after she allegedly drowned her eight-year-old daughter yesterday morning.

The 32-year old woman, from Motoseng village near Mmabatho in North West, took her two children to Tontonyane Dam where she allegedly drowned the eldest.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa said it was proving difficult to get any information from the woman.

"She is in custody and we have been trying to get information from her, but it's proving difficult. She is not co-operative as she is not saying anything to the police. The only thing she said was she wanted to die. Other than that, she is not saying much," Moiloa said.

The tragedy took place between eight and nine o'clock in the morning. "She allegedly took her children to the dam and pushed one in. The child drowned and her body was only discovered later," Moiloa said.

It took police divers hours to recover the little girl's body.

"She drowned in the morning, but her body was only recovered around 2o'clock in the afternoon."

Moiloa said the woman had allegedly also tried to take her own life and that of her youngest child.

"She jumped into the water with the youngest whom she had been carrying on her back. Fortunately the community members saw what was happening and quickly rescued them," she said.

The woman will appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court soon on charges of murder and attempted murder. - selebim@sowetan.co.za

Sterelize all women until they get married so that we can be able to finger the Fathers, right now they have kids with Men they can't point a finger at and now this. This is not the first time in Mahikeng, it keeps on happening, what is the ANC women League education to women has been there? are they doing anything to uplift the mess women find themselves in, I mean having ten kids with ten different men does that make any sense? ANC Women's League, do what you preach, emancipate women.
