Muldersdrift hit by crime wave
THE mushrooming of informal settlements, illegal immigrants and lack of safety precautions have made Muldersdrift a hot-spot for criminals.
Muldersdrift, which is on the far West Rand, is home to numerous lodges, entertainment venues and major tourists attractions such as the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site.
A former police detective - now a private security owner in the area - Jacques Preptow, said 25 of 27 plots on Clinic Road have been hit by gun-toting criminals recently.
He said: "... the issue here is that there are a lot of small informal settlements that have popped up in the last few months," he said.
Preptow also blamed police for "poor work".
Department of Economic Development spokeswoman Phindile Kunene said: "This will have an impact on jobs generated by tourism, leisure and related business operations in the area ..."
