The first of the apartheid-era street names in Gugulethu, Cape Town, will be renamed Stephen Biko Drive
The Cape Times reported that the township’s main road, NY1 (Native Yard) would be renamed on Monday to mark the launch of a renaming campaign in the area.
Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille (ex PAC) and Western Cape premier Helen Zille would celebrate with the Biko family at Gugulethu square, to honour the struggle icon.
The “Name your Hood” campaign would invite the public to suggest names for 91 streets and eight neighbourhoods.
The voting would be open for two weeks, after which the naming committee would deliberate on the names offered.
According to the report, the city council was expected to vote on the name changes in a year
The late Steve Biko

About bloody time, if it was my will i would name the Airport in Cape Town: Steve Biko International Airport, or even something bigger.I am a black south african but I really think DA is doing the right thing, regardles of what was said about their philosophy, pity they honour our own people intead of US infact we are shy and scared of honouring likes of Biko and Chris Hani and many other stalwarts, which makes me to think that DA by the way is also a South African political party, and i am also a South African
Well done Zille, you deserve praise

Street names, memorial Days, T shirts, TV documentaries, Posters, RememberancesGood but all amount to nothing when our current crop of leaders are a far cry and an insult what was once the Spirit of Steve Biko.
Pretty much like greedy vultures paying homage to a lion.

CheeseBoy: I agree 100%. This smacks of opportunism. The Metro trying a "hearts and minds" trick on the mob.Report Abuse

RobinH - If they changed the streetname to something else, it would have been racist. Changed the streetname to biko, and now they are opportunists.Report Abuse

Sin. Why change it at all? Waste of money. I maintain that the timing is all too fortuitous to be sqeaky clean. Not only the ANC that has it's share of opportunism, my friend. That, alas, is one of the few equal opportunities areas.Report Abuse

@ Sinudeity not everything is about race you know??
As for the Western Cape Gov. I know for sure that all it's black supporters do the dirty job in the streets while the whites get all the decent jobs in the office, this right here is OPPORTUNISM!!
