ANCYL member jailed for murder
Oshabeni ANC Youth League leader Sifiso Khumalo was jailed for 22 years on Tuesday for the murder of two ANC KwaZulu-Natal South Coast members.
Pietermaritzburg High Court acting judge Sibusiso Mngomezulu said that while murder was a serious crime, the court had opted for a lighter sentence as Khumalo gave evidence without wasting the court's time.
ANC leaders including provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala and treasurer Peggy Nkonyeni, attended the proceedings. Speaking outside the court after the sentencing, Zikalala said they felt the sentence did not fit the crime.
Khumalo, 31, a taxi driver, was arrested within 24 hours of the murders of Bheki Chiliza and Dumisani Malunga. Chiliza was Oshabeni branch secretary and Malunga was branch chairman. They were shot dead on their way home from an ANC meeting.
Khumalo pleaded guilty. His co-accused Hle Samuel Cele has pleaded not guilty, so the trial against him will continue separately.
According to a statement by Khumalo for his guilty plea, he and Cele had arranged for a hit man to kill Malunga. However, unbeknown to him and Cele, the assassin had come across both Malunga and Chiliza at the same time and opted to kill them both.
Malunga and Khumalo were vying for the same job, as a ward councillor
Khumalo did not reveal how much the assassin — who is believed to still be at large — was paid.
