MEC's plea for tough justice

NORTH West MEC for human settlements, public safety and liaison Nono Maloyi has called on the justice system to mete out a harsh sentence to a farmer and his son who are accused of electrocuting a farmworker and for attempted murder.

Mathys Cloete, 69, and his son Danie, 33, allegedly assaulted, electrocuted and killed Bakang Moleko, 24, and also assaulted Shadrack Anderson, 20, earlier this month after accusing the two of stealing two tyres and diesel.

The father and son were released on bail of R2000 each by the Vryburg Magistrate's Court last Friday.

In his plea, Cloete senior said the holding cells were not conducive for his health and also accused the police of failing to organise him his medication.

Maloyi said though he respected the court's decision, he was disappointed the two were granted bail.

The two accused face charges of murder, attempted murder, assault and pointing a firearm.

Maloyi said: "As the department we would like to condemn the killing of Bakang Moleko in the strongest possible terms and call on the justice system to issue a harsher sentence in the case.

"This will send a clear message to all farmers who continue to abuse innocent farmworkers, and that the law will continue to protect its citizens and persecute those who continue to commit such atrocious acts."

It is alleged that Mathys Cloete and his son chained and used electric shock on one of the victims, using a car battery booster after he reportedly refused to tell the truth to the farmer and his son.

The farmworker collapsed and Danie Cloete poured water on his face to revive him, but he was certified dead on his arrival at a local clinic. - tshehleb@sowetan.co.za
