Suspect in BMW murder was twice paroled
Released 'for good behaviour, after rehabilitation courses and skills training'
A man in custody for the murder of 21-year-old Olwyn Cowley could have his parole revoked, it was reported on Thursday.
The Cape Argus reported that Soegbodien Abvajee, 52, was released on parole for the second time in April for good behaviour, after rehabilitation courses and skills training.
“Although he is still awaiting trial on the new charge, consideration is being given to revoke his parole so that he can start serving the remainder of his previous sentence as a sentenced offender,” correctional services spokesman Koos Gerber said.
Abvajee had about seven years of prison ahead of him for an armed robbery he was convicted of in 2004.
He had apparently been in and out of prison since 2000 and had previously absconded from parole.
He was charged along with Jason Elias, 30, Shawaal Staggie, 26, and Rameez Felix, 29, for the death of Cowley, whom they contacted through classifieds website Gumtree.
Cowley had posted an advertisement for his silver BMW 325 TI.
His body was found at Monwabisi beach at the end of August with two bullet wounds to the head. His BMW was later found in Mitchells Plain.

"consideration is being given to revoke his parole"Shouldn't that be automatic?
No wonder our cops are trigger happy or so demotivated that they don't even bother. The justice system is a joke. If they even get a decent sentence, they are out early anyhow.

The best of our justice system... When the judge sentences u to life, it actually means 25 years, and with good behaviour you end up serving half of it, about 15 years or so... If rapists and murderers are sentenced to 15 years, with good behaviour you end up serving only 9... That's Mzansi for u, long as the sentence doesn't specify that "...without the possibility of a parole", every sentence means these muthaf#kcas spend only half their sentence, and come back to now rape our 94 year old gogos n kill u for your hard-earned living...Report Abuse

Why blame the justice system, this is the law. When the gov want to change the law you complain, when the same law screw you, you still complain. MommaC, we are not at that level yet, our systems cannot dictate that immediately, the court must revoke his parole & order him to serve the remainder of his previous sentences. The guy`s family must s u e the ministers of justice, correctional service and police for millions.Report Abuse

skhokho21No. When the government wants to make the law a tool for their own use - I complain. I have always said that our laws should be overhauled but by those who KNOW the law - not a bunch of ignorant politicians with personal agendas

MommaC, politicians part of their job is to come up with these laws and we are allowed to participate to make these changes and when these laws are ready to be made official, politicians vote and the majority wins but the opposition keeps on going to court when they are democratically defitted hence the gov is now making it a law for the courts not to rule over parliament as it is the highest office of a country.Report Abuse

skhokho21So our ignorant Std3 dropout president should be dictating the law to the judges who have studied the subject?

MommaC, don`t worry the "dropout" has no input on these issues, they are way above his std3 hence he has advisors who consult with others who have studied the subject, when they are done they explain to him in "dropout' language for him to understand and let him sign into law after it has been reviewed by all.Report Abuse
