The body of the 22-year-old woman, a final year law student at the University of Pretoria, was found in a backyard room in Fourways on Thursday.

The police arrested the boyfriend, who was also a final year law student, on Friday in Pretoria, Gauteng police spokeswoman Captain Pinky Tsinyane confirmed yesterday.

Tsinyane said the man was using the victim's car when he was arrested.

She would not reveal further details except to say that the boyfriend was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of murder. Investigations were continuing.

The spokeswoman for the University of Pretoria, Nicolize Mulder, said police informed the university on Friday that "one of its students was killed during a tragic incident".

Mulder said they did not have details but "the university will give further assistance to the police investigation if requested to do so".

She extended the institution's "sincere condolences" to the victim's family. - mckeed@sowetan.co.za
