Prof Jansen is becoming more and more of a reactionary, how wrong was I to think of him as a progressive intellectual. Much as Zuma's sexual excapades are well known and much publicized, we must be careful not to aportion all blame for our sick society on one individual.
All these things that the prof was talking about have been troubling South Africa long before Zuma came back from exile. Instead of giving vocational guidance to the pupils, the prof was engaged in retrogressive gossip that does not help out kids choose subjects suited for today's careers, what a flop.
Since the 90s, I have participated in career guidance winter camps for matriculants (sponsored by Caltex), there we talked about careers and which subjects are better suited for one intending to persue engineering, various medical professions etc.
We even invited professionals in those fields to come talk to the kids and I am very happy when I meet some of those "kids" after 'varsity having followed their dreams. I wish the prof had prepared some speech to encourage the children on career pathing and also invite them to his institution for a career guidance week, instead he decided to think about Zuma's zip. I respect and admire Prof Jansen, but this is wrong. Just as it is wrong for the ANC and the ANCYL especially to involve school children in politics, so it is wrong for Prof Jansen to make remarks to them that will influence their ideas about the president. Even if he is right in his message, it is not necessary to refer to specific people, especially when there are politics involved. Being educated is not just about earning a nice fat salary (which is good). Ultimately it is about knowing how to make choices in life. You know that you can research alternatives, analyse options and derive the best fit for your situation.

i had thought for som time that, once a person is termed professor then he/she is educated and mannered or educated but to my dismay reading this article on Prof Jansen i found out that i have been misled. His statements shows that he is certificated but far from being educated, he was not taught morals earlier and this only reflects now when he is expected to be morally correct. it cannot be correct of anyone to pump kids with insults against the President and think that such a behaviour is motivating, he is instead brewing a non-moral and discipline lacking nation. maybe he never grew African and therefore he would see nothing wrong in these words form a so called highly educated individual. Many things are clear an indicator of people like him who hate their country and to say he was born at cape flats i doubt but should that be correct i doubt that his family would ever be proud of him. This is very sad indeed. The other day I went to the Women's Day rally to participate in the roceedings. I had taken my wife and one of my sons along. It was all fine until Jacob Zuma was called on onto the podium to address the crowd and my young son started complaining that he was not going to sit there and listen to Jacob Zuma. I tried to calm him and urge him to stay and lsiten to Jacob Zuma as it was unlikely to do him any harm. The young man would have none of it and decided to leave because he had better things to do. Jacob Zuma is not my favourite but I can still sit and listen to his boring and uninspiring lectures. I do think Professor Jansen is spot on. Prof Jansen is becoming more and more of a reactionary, how wrong was I to think of him as a progressive intellectual. Much as Zuma's sexual excapades are well known and much publicized, we must be careful not to aportion all blame for our sick society on one individual.All these things that the prof was talking about have been troubling South Africa long before Zuma came back from exile. Instead of giving vocational guidance to the pupils, the prof was engaged in retrogressive gossip that does not help out kids choose subjects suited for today's careers, what a flop.
Since the 90s, I have participated in career guidance winter camps for matriculants (sponsored by Caltex), there we talked about careers and which subjects are better suited for one intending to persue engineering, various medical professions etc.
We even invited professionals in those fields to come talk to the kids and I am very happy when I meet some of those "kids" after 'varsity having followed their dreams. I wish the prof had prepared some speech to encourage the children on career pathing and also invite them to his institution for a career guidance week, instead he decided to think about Zuma's zip. Poor leadership from the prof.

and look at a man like Oom Richard Maponya who does not have a formal education and yet he built the biggest shopping complex in Soweto, look at Menzi Mchunu, Khanyi Mbau's father, the man who introduced mobile advertising(those who reside in Soweto knows all the taxis with a slogan"Mchunu Properties, Jomo Sono never had formal education and look at him today, Dr Irvin Khoza never went to some cosy lecture room and just look at him, the late Godfrey " the Godfather" Moloi built an empire that most of the educated people still do not have, and mind you the man has passed on for almost 20 years , Isaac Thulo of Jouberton, is well off and the man is not educated, the late Zola Mahobe of Mamelodi Sundowns was so rich he once took all the players to Brazil to play a friendly game, and that man was not educated. The late Boy Mafa of Pretoria was well off he once made a joke that should he race both Kaiser and Jomo by puting R50 notes on the road from Union Buildings to Johannesburg, their money will get them as far as Midrand if they are lucky, and he said his money will actually get to Johannesburg and back to Midrand where both Jomo and Kaiser's money ran out at. and guess what? the man was not eduacted.

It is a Fact that the youth of today do not see any value in education because of the evidence in front of their eyes where all the so called 'successful' people have not educational qualifications and/or are beneficiaries of political connections.This therefore hold credence that there is no incentive in education and that the best way to make it and be successful is to be an ANC carde who will either be deployed and/or access government tenders.

I respect and admire Prof Jansen, but this is wrong. Just as it is wrong for the ANC and the ANCYL especially to involve school children in politics, so it is wrong for Prof Jansen to make remarks to them that will influence their ideas about the president. Even if he is right in his message, it is not necessary to refer to specific people, especially when there are politics involved. The message can be brought across in another way, and the children can make up their own minds about specific people and political parties.Report Abuse

Too many people get caught up with following "leaders" who are the most eloquent, the loudest or the richest simply because they have not learnt to use their brains.

i had thought for som time that, once a person is termed professor then he/she is educated and mannered or educated but to my dismay reading this article on Prof Jansen i found out that i have been misled. His statements shows that he is certificated but far from being educated, he was not taught morals earlier and this only reflects now when he is expected to be morally correct. it cannot be correct of anyone to pump kids with insults against the President and think that such a behaviour is motivating, he is instead brewing a non-moral and discipline lacking nation. maybe he never grew African and therefore he would see nothing wrong in these words form a so called highly educated individual. Many things are clear an indicator of people like him who hate their country and to say he was born at cape flats i doubt but should that be correct i doubt that his family would ever be proud of him. I agree with everybodies sentiments that an education does not guarantee success, but nothing tangible determines success!!A good education ensures that you will at least be average. There are a lot of average doctor, lawyers, economists and the like... there aren't a lot of guys who made it from scratch with nothing but ambition, this will always be extrordinary and that is something not everyone is capable of.

The fact that there are people who have made successes of things without education in no way lessens the importance of some form of education if one wants to escape the cycle of poverty. In today's world numeracy is vital, and the ability to communicate intelligibly is also quite helpful, even though the skills of many in that arena leave much to be desired. A blanket denunciation of education is just crazy, with respect, and it seems you actually do realise that, as you do draw a distinction at the foot of your remark.

This is very sad indeed. The other day I went to the Women's Day rally to participate in the roceedings. I had taken my wife and one of my sons along. It was all fine until Jacob Zuma was called on onto the podium to address the crowd and my young son started complaining that he was not going to sit there and listen to Jacob Zuma. I tried to calm him and urge him to stay and lsiten to Jacob Zuma as it was unlikely to do him any harm. The young man would have none of it and decided to leave because he had better things to do. Jacob Zuma is not my favourite but I can still sit and listen to his boring and uninspiring lectures. I do think Professor Jansen is spot on. My son does not have to be persuaded by Jansen.He already knows that the president is very bad example and role model.Report Abuse
